It occurred to me last night, that Lane rode Red Rock at Livermore - 32 years ago yesterday's date - the Saturday performance - and in 1994, Red Rock died right... before Livermore... so I checked - June 8, 1994. 26 years ago! And Lane 31 years this July. Wow.. What a lot of memories and emotions. If you had told me, when I was growing up, and I made a list of everything I wanted to do in my life, that it would include photographically documenting the Prorodeo culture and that I would also end up being the PR person for those 2 great guys (Lane and Red Rock) and The Challenge of the Champions... well... it would never, ever, in a billion years have crossed my mind. But, that is exactly what happened. And it's one of three times in my life when I KNEW I was doing what I was supposed to be doing. Our arcs all crossed at the right time. I know that a lot of people today know Lane - and maybe even Red Rock - through the Hollywood movie "8 Seconds." They did a good job putting them out there - marketing-wise - and Luke Perry, may he rest in peace, did look uncannily like Lane sometimes. But that was a movie. Of part of my life - and a lot of other people's lives. So when they didn't even bother to get a red brindle to play Red Rock... not to mention being heart-breakingly sad.. I knew the real Lane Frost and the real Red Rock, and for not quite a year, they were what my entire life was about. To this day, they are still part of my life. I knew Lane before and after the Challenge and I knew Red Rock more during and after the Challenge. But working with both of them and John Growney and all the media people, not the least of which was NBC's George Michael who was my first call once I started doing PR for the guys - it was some kind of magic!! I didn't meet Lane's parents until the funeral - but I'd spoken to both on the phone. Over the years they've become part of the little family that also includes John Growney and Kendra Santos. Lane and Red Rock keep us meeting up at various places. So - remembering Red Rock who died 26 years ago this week in his pasture - a great guy - innately kind, intelligent, funny and pretty much game for anything, who, oh by the way, bucked off 309 attempts in his professional career... and Lane twice more before he rode Red Rock for the full 8 at Redding Rodeo in the Challenge. The two of them were their own microcosm of what is right with the world. What a dream team. I took these photos of Lane and Red Rock 32 years ago! The one of Lane riding Red Rock for the 2nd time at Livermore and the one of Lane and Red Rock in September of 1988. I hand-colored it for a t-shirt produced in the 1990's.

California Bull Rider Aaron Williams was featured in today's PRCA Weekly Press Release: Bull rider Aaron Williams overcomes injuries, gives back to rodeo Last... September, bull rider Aaron Williams was on the verge of making his first Wrangler National Finals Rodeo. The Apple Valley, Calif., bull rider won the Marysville (Calif.) Stampede aboard Flying U Rodeo's No. 833/6 on Sept. 14. He earned $1,634 to creep into the Top 15 in the PRCA | RAM World Standings. Instead of celebrating, Williams’ joy ended moments after the eight-second whistle. I won the rodeo and just had a bad get off, said Williams, 23. I ended up getting run over, stepped on and breaking my free (left) arm at the top of my arm by my shoulder. By the time the regular season concluded, Williams had dropped to 26th in the world standings with $67,066. It was pretty tough (missing the NFR), Williams said. I went to Puyallup (Wash.) and from there I was supposed to go to Albuquerque. I had a really good bull drawn in Albuquerque, and my van’s transmission went out in the middle of nowhere in Utah. I ended up not making Albuquerque and a couple other rodeos. Then my fiancée (Brigette Mickels) drove nine hours and came and got me, and we finished out the drive to Pendleton (Ore.). I went to Pendleton and Othello (Wash.) in the same day and then to Marysville. After his left arm healed, Williams suffered another injury, this time to his right (riding) arm at the National Western Stock Show and Rodeo in Denver in January. Unbeknownst to me, in Denver I got some pretty bad bulls in the bucking chute, and one of them hung me in there and broke the top of my riding arm, Williams said, I didn’t even know it. I went through all my rodeos up to San Antonio. I took X-rays in San Antonio and found out it was broke. At that point it already was healing, and I kept going. When rodeos went on hiatus in mid-March because of the coronavirus pandemic, Williams got time to heal up. I’m now pretty healthy, Williams said. I’ve also battled knee problems with my knees since I was a kid. This has allowed me to have time to get my knees back in order. I’ve had PCL, MCL and ACL, and meniscus damage in my knees from riding bulls. The 2020 season has been a mess for Williams (as for all cowboys) because of the COVID-19 pandemic. To keep busy, Williams put on a bull riding school in mid-May in Porterville, Calif. That went really well, Williams said. I’m doing another school for junior kids and more bull riders June 13 in Bakersfield (Calif.). I enjoy being able to pass off the things I have learned and the knowledge that I have gained over the years. It was fun to pass off my knowledge to these young guys who are hungry and wanting to get better. I think this next school (June 13) is going to be really cool. This sport could really use a surge of youth for the future. Williams, who is outside the top 50 in the world standings, competed at Cave Creek (Ariz.) Rodeo Days, May 22-24, the first rodeo since the pandemic halted the schedule. He placed sixth with an 83.5-point ride. Next up for him are the Pony Express Rodeo in Eagle Mountain, Utah, June 11-13, and the World’s Oldest Rodeo in Prescott, Ariz., June 29-July 5. I have never been to Eagle Mountain before, Williams said. I'm excited to go there. I’m ready to get back to work and get back to doing what we do. It was unfortunate the way I planned out my year this year. I wasn’t going to stretch myself too thin, being that I was coming back off injury. It's a long year and I had a lot of big rodeos I was qualified into, like RodeoHouston and the RAM National Circuit Finals Rodeo. That was going to save me from having to go to a lot of smaller rodeos that I normally would. I’m just going to show up and do my job, and let the cards fall where they may.

It is with an extremely heavy heart we have to announce the cancelation of our Rodeo for 2020. Without clear guidance from the Governor of California on when we can gather in large groups, we cannot plan our Rodeo. We thank all of you for your support and cannot wait to see you all in 2021! #weareprorodeo
