Today marks the 100th anniversary of ratification of the 19th Amendment, which guarantees women's constitutional right to vote. By the summer of 1920, 35 states... had ratified, but one more was needed to add this amendment to the Constitution, leading to a tumultuous battle in Tennessee, known as the "War of the Roses," to secure the votes to ratify. The vote took place on the Senate floor of the Tennessee State Capitol on August 18, with ratification narrowly passing, securing women’s right to vote and the largest expansion of democracy in U.S. history.
