Children have a knack for pushing boundaries and will do their best to see how far you, as a parent, will let them go. Ensure that your boundaries are concrete and never changing. Here are a few ways to establish boundaries: 1) Be consistent-- When you've established a boundary, don't make exceptions. If you allow the boundary to be pushed, it tells them that that boundary and any boundary after it are breakable under certain circumstances.... 2) Positive reinforcement-- Praising them when they do something you like will have better results than punishing them for something you don't like. Children want your attention and will go to either extreme to get it. 3) Consequences -- Positive reinforcement doesn't mean no consequences. The goal of consequences is to show the result of an action. If your child doesn't clean their room, then instead of the fun activity they were going to do when you got home, they must clean their room and do dishes instead. These are a few ways to ensure that your kids stay on the right path you set out for them. Listen to your child's concerns without judgement and don't take it personally when they're behavior affects you. Children react to trauma in several different ways. Even though trauma can be emotional, they often will react in a physical way by fighting, throwing fits, or even getting sick often. Dealing with scary things this halloween when your child is anxious Is your child afraid of Halloween? Maybe the toy graveyard or the spider in front of a person's yard has them extremely anxious. You may want your child to enjoy dress up, trick-or-treating, and the spooky "haunted" houses in your neighborhood. There is a way! Try teaching your child there is nothing to be afraid of. You can do so through exposure therapy. Have your child touch or hear the spooky things and they will eventually realize that there is nothing to be afraid of. Just remember to start small. If your child is too scared to touch or hear them, have them look at them from a distance until they're ready to get closer. It's all in time and they will learn to love the Halloween games.

COVID-19 has been unkind to all parents and children this year. It's been a particularly stressful year with virtual home-schooling and working. We hope to ease your pain and give you some ideas on how to handle Halloween with your children during this time. We've given tips in a previous post about what to do with your children, but they're probably wondering why they won't go trick-or-treating this year. Here's what you can do to help them:... Go trick-or-treating in your backyard! Build little cardboard cutout houses and pretend to be different people. Hand out candy to them Pretend like it's any other day. If you're not big on Halloween anyway, instead of hyping the day up for your kids, you can be casual. Explain to your children that you're protecting others from getting sick by not going outside this year. It'll probably make them sad, but the truth hurts sometimes. Dealing with PTSD on your own is a daunting task. You may be doing all the right things like talking to family and/or friends or going to therapy, but what can you do to help yourself just a little bit more? These are some tips to help you help yourself: Challenge your sense of helplessness. Tell yourself that you are worth helping and you should treat yourself as such.... Exercise your body and mind. Exercising your body gives you a sense of control over what you can and won't do. You have power over yourself. No one else does. Join a PTSD group! Sure, you can talk to your friends and family, but if they don't know what you're going through or the feelings that you're experiencing, it can easily make you feel isolated. There isn't a magic pill that gets rid of PTSD. It takes a lot of time and effort to feel "normal". If it has been a month since the traumatic event and you still see symptoms of PTSD, it is highly recommended that you take your child to therapy. Dealing with ADHD can be overwhelming as adult, especially for women. Women don't normally get a diagnosis until adulthood because more often than not, they are, by appearances, shy. They are more likely to be diagnosed with inattentive ADHD. This means they daydream more often, have trouble listening, and they subtly fidget around in their seat. They don't bring their ADHD to the front and center like most people with hyperactive ADHD do. Women with ADHD have varying inten...sities where an average day seems like you get a lot of work done, but then their menstrual cycle hits and they experience a fog of distractions and anxiety. Hormones play a big part in women with ADHD. This makes them receive a misdiagnoses of depression or anxiety, instead of ADHD. It's always difficult to tell someone when a disorder is untreatable. ADHD is one of those. On the bright side, it is manageable through behavioral therapy and medication. Tips in managing your ADHD: ALARMS - If you know you need to be somewhere at a specific time, set an alarm for when you need to start getting ready AND for when you need to leave so you can leave on time. Luckily GPSes nowadays have a "need to leave by" feature so you can set an alarm for that time.... If you need to pay a bill or finish that homework assignment, put it right in front of your desk so when you sit down, you can be reminded. Always think of your future self. If you need to do something, think of ways to remind your future self to do them. An example would be the alarms tip above. You can also try a calendar and put it in a place where you will always see it. Leave your phone in your room when you are cooking. I doubt you want to have a burnt dinner and being distracted by your phone is a surefire way to do so. ADHD is extremely difficult. Trust me, I know how it feels to be overwhelmed and in a fog 24/7. This week we're going to be talking about ADHD. The signs of ADHD, especially in girls, are often overlooked, associating ADHD to just excitable children. There are 3 types of ADHD - combined, inattentive, and hyperactive. While each one has differing symptoms, they have similarities as well:... They will Take a long time to complete tasks Become bored extremely easily Have a hard time sitting still - May move around the room or fidget in their chair Has difficulty listening, especially when the area is noisy Having these symptoms doesn't automatically make you ADHD, but these are the commonalities.
