Oh, that sweet infant gummy smile! So serene.... so innocent.... so adorable. But all toothless mouths must come to an end and teething starts another fun developmental stage for your little one. Teething can also stir up some anxiety in the breast/chestfeeding parent, which we are hoping to alleviate today. We turned to the wise nursing parents on Facebook to offer some tips for dealing with a biting chest/breastfeeder. As always, your advice was amazing. Here is what y...ou had to say. Liz: Ugh. Cry? I do the "don't bite. That hurts." And set P on the ground for a few minutes. Then nurse again. Michelle: I found that using a nursing necklace was really helpful. Instead of pulling back on my nipple when he distracted, he would play with the nursing necklace while breastfeeding and focus on feeding. I found that he mostly bit down when he was distracted. Katie Jo: What ultimately worked for me was to pay close attention and learn to recognize when he was finished eating. Then I would have to quickly unlatch him with my finger before he started to play/explore what he could do with his teeth. Amber: Remember, it’s just a phase! "I slept like a baby "When I hear this saying, I immediately envision sleeping deeply, soundly, and for 10 hours straight. Whoever came up with that saying clearly didn’t have children! All of the babies I know definitely do not sleep soundly for an extended period of time until at least toddlerhood and even then sleep can be disrupted by teething, colds, and just regular night waking." Did you know that: ... 1. Newborns eat about of their food during the night. 2. Besides having a small stomach capacity, newborns are hard-wired to wake frequently during the day and night. 3. Your baby is also going to eat all of the time. This is what builds and maintains your milk supply. This is also what helps your baby gain weight and grow. Before becoming a parent what were your expectations of sleep with a newborn? How did that change about sleep once your little one made its way earthside? Breast/chestfeeding past the first looks different for all families. Some families may have a toddler who nurses like a newborn and goes to breast frequently throughout the day, nursing as many as 10 or more times in 24 hours. Others may have slowly decreased the number of breastfeeding sessions they have each day and may find that at this age, their toddler is breastfeeding as little as once or twice a day.... As long as you and baby are happy with your nursing relationship and have found a rhythm and balance that works for you, then breastfeeding is going well! How does breastfeeding your toddler look? Wondering whether you still need to pump at work or if you need to give your breastmilk-fed baby cow milk? #tuesdaybreastfeedingtip Have you tried the koala hold/straddle hold? This position is not just for big kids! It can be an amazing tool when newborns/infants are struggling to latch. This position works with gravity to help baby open widely and get a comfortable latch and can allow for the parent to be more comfortable as well.... Some tips we have 1. This is sometimes easier with kiddos who are older than 2 weeks as they have a bit more head control, however every baby is different and you may find this works for you at an earlier time. 2. support their upper shoulders and neck (not holding their head) with one hand and you may need to use the other hand to support the breast 3. Play around with your leg (the one they are seated on), crossing it, stretching it out, putting it up on a table can help adjust babies height to fit on you more comfortably. 4. for smaller babies with less head control; once latched guide their head to turn inward and allow their head to rest in the crook of your arm or against your upper arm (you will need a pillow likely to help support your arm). Do you love this position? What tips do you have? Just a few more days to donate to the SDBFC Foundation to help us reach our goal of 10k by the end of 2020!! You can donate here: https://www.flipcause.com/secure/cause_pdetails/MTAwNDI2 Here is Emily's story... "While every mom dreams of that special bond with their child, nursing without any obstacles, our breastfeeding journey has hit many speed bumps. Before my daughter was born, I thought I was prepared. I had taken two virtual breastfeeding classes with Robin ...of San Diego Breastfeeding Center (SDBFC). I knew exactly how to create the perfect latch, and which positions are best for breastfeeding. However, once my daughter was born, I quickly learned it was going to be lots of trials and tribulations. Reluctantly, I shared my struggles with a great neighbor of mine. She told me she was also facing challenges but had met with an amazing IBCLC at the SDBFC, Ms. Vicky Gellis. I shared with her that during this time, in the midst of COVID, my husband had just been laid off and our family wasn’t able to afford the cost of one-on-one consultations through the Breastfeeding Center. She insisted I reach out to Vicky and she would still be able to assist us...somehow! I was ecstatic to learn from Vicky that the San Diego Breastfeeding Center Foundation, with the help of special grants and donations, allows struggling families to have the opportunity to meet with IBCLCS at an affordable cost. I booked an appointment immediately. If it wasn’t for these low cost appointments, there is no way I would have been able to afford the opportunity to meet with Vicky. During my first visit with Vicky, I was in tears as I shared with her our struggles. I don’t know what I would have done without her support. It’s been a few months, and after a couple- very informative and helpful visits, we have come a long way. My daughter is nursing better than she ever has. While we still have a ways to go, it gets better every day. Thank you to SDBFC for giving our family the opportunity to receive this amazing support and help." See more

Did you know that San Diego has pockets of ‘breastfeeding deserts’ where there is limited access to breastfeeding/chestfeeding support groups and lactation consultants. These deserts exist in areas that have a higher population of low income families and families of color. We feel that this is absolutely unacceptable! Today, on Giving Tuesday, we have a goal to fund 130 free/reduced-fee lactation consultations for local BIPOC and low-income families in 2021. To meet this goa...l, we need to raise $10,000. Increasing access to breast/chestfeeding support for families of color and low-income families has been possible due to the incredible generosity of our community, particularly during these challenging times. #Mondaymorningmagic from @khloekuriatnyk We will have a coffee with a side of milk It’s a gloomy day in SD, we are ready for our version of fall to begin! What’s your fav thing about fall? ... AND....Yes, you can drink coffee/caffeine while breastfeeding/lactating. Caffeine in excessive amounts (more than 750mg per day) could cause caffeine stimulation in your baby. Most families find they are able to have caffeine with no effects to baby. Babies under 6 months may be more sensitive though. From @kellymom...If your baby seems particularly wakeful or fussy and there is a significant amount of caffeine in your diet, you might want to cut back or stop the caffeine for 2-3 weeks to see if it makes a difference. If you cut out caffeine, consider decreasing it slowly since abruptly stopping caffeine can result in headaches or other symptoms. #lactationstation #bodypositivebreastfeeding #infantriskcenter #breastfeedeverywhere #sandiegofamilies #ig_motherhood #breastmilk #infantfeeding #ibclcsupport #motherhood #parentingsupport #doulatraining #happymamahappybaby See more

Heart explosion... "the space you don't know you need until you really need it." We are honored to be this space for families. Our mission is to provide judgement free, research based support so that you can learn, grow and understand your baby and yourself as a parent. Did you know, our office is actually a 2 bedroom 1 bath house. We have equipped each room with comfortable seating, scale for weighing baby, all the tools we need to help you and your fam...ilies. We have surrounded our rooms with calming colors, fabrics, beautiful images of families and plants...of course plants. We very often hear from families how nice our space is compared to the hospital rooms, pediatrician offices, and other spaces they may visit as new parents. This was our goal! We want you to come in and feel relaxed, feel safe, loved, looked after, cradled and supported JUST AS YOU ARE. If you need support, please let us know. Perfectly said, from @coumbasak, thank you for sharing your experience! Did you see breastfeeding growing up? Has it helped you now? The more I learn about the history of black women breastfeeding, the more I understand the need for this week. The need to encourage and support black mothers to breastfeed and to heal.... Sometimes I feel privileged to be able to breastfeed. Being from Senegal, I grew up seeing family members and neighbors breastfeed. My mama nursed me until I was 3 1/2, So the seed to breastfeed was already planted. Some black women do not have this experience. Black moms were forced to wet nurse their slave master's babies. Black babies were at times left without breastmilk, nutrition, or nurturing. Generational traumas, systemic barriers, along with lack of support and education on breastfeeding play a role on the breastfeeding disparities we see. See more

Do you need support ASAP! We happen to have some availability this week if so. Please visit our website, www.sdbfc.com or call 619-724-4117 to schedule. We have virtual appointments available, as well as in person office visits at our La Mesa office. Did you know we are a team of 5 IBCLCs. This means our office can accommodate clients Monday through Friday, all day! We can help you with any stage of feeding; newborn, painful latching, weight gain struggles, ton...gue and lip ties, going back to work, pumping, supplementing, changes as baby grows, weaning and everything in-between you can think of. Our Team is: Robin Kaplan: IBCLC, M.ED., and owner of the San Diego Breastfeeding Center Foundation: "The assistance from a kind individual can empower us to successfully defeat any challenge. My hope is that I can provide that same compassionate, non-judgmental care for my new parents so that they will feel empowered in their ability to breastfeed." Debbie Murai: RN, BSN, IBCLC; "I had such great experiences breastfeeding my children, but many of my friends did not and they did not have anyone to turn to for help. This is when I decided I wanted to focus on lactation as a profession. " Ashley Tehrani: IBCLC; "When I had my baby girl, I was so fortunate to have expert help with breastfeeding while in the hospital, navigating jaundice, triple feedings and just new parenthood. I was even more fortunate to find SDBFC for continued support and expertise as my baby grew and our feeding journey evolved. " Vicky Gellis: IBCLC; They say it takes a village and I feel so thankful to be able to help and empower new parents to confidently care for their little one. So many families are tackling it on their own and I want to ensure that they have the resources and encouragement every step of the way." Tabitha Kemp: RN, IBCLC; Breastfeeding was one of the hardest things I ever learned to do. I credit my success to the amazing women in my life who allowed me to learn from their example and who ingrained in me the belief that I could do it. Having support with feedings in the early days is life changing. See more
