Summer Dance Workshop Faculty Spotlight! REBEKAH BROWN, San Diego Dance Theater Teaching Artist and Operations Manager, received her BFA in Dance from the State University of New York at Buffalo and her MFA in Choreography and Performance from Mills College. She has taught and choreographed for over 15 years, drawing inspiration from her training in ballet, modern, contemporary, and jazz. In addition to her ties to San Diego Dance Theater, Rebekah is the founder/director of H...2O Dance Company, co-curates both ‘Fresh Dances’ and ‘ArtMOVES’ (the dance stage at ArtWalk San Diego). Summer Dance Workshop Faculty Spotlight! CARLOS VILLATORO brings a background rich in dance instruction and performance to San Diego's flamenco scene. A graduate in Danza Folklorica Mexicana from the INBA in Mexico City, his formal instruction in flamenco began in 1998 after his first trip to Spain. In 2006, Villatoro was chosen to star as a flamenco dancer in Carmen with The San Diego Opera. In 2007 he joined Academia Franco as a flamenco dance instructor. Since then, Vil...latoro has appeared as flamenco dancer with the San Diego Opera and the Los Angeles Opera. In 2010 he founded the Flamenco Sur Dance Company, where he continues his flamenco instruction in San Diego today. Carlos will be teaching flamenco from July 26th to July 30th. Prior to moving to San Diego, she performed in the Bay Area with ODC/San Francisco Dance Company and taught at Mills College, Berkeley Ballet and Shawl-Anderson Dance Center. She has numerous performance credits, including with the first national touring company of The King and I. She trained at Duke Ellington High School of Performing Arts in Washington, DC and received ...her Horton Pedagogy Certification from the Alvin Ailey School. Akayaa is a native of the Frafra tribe in the Upper East Region of Ghana. She attended the Performing Arts School of Ghana, where she furthered her study of the talking drum and traditional dances. Akayaa obtained a Masters in Dance and Music from the Performing Arts College in Ghana in 1982. In 2002, she founded Akayaa and Bolgo Zohdoomah, a high life musical band, in San Diego, CA. She also teaches music and dance to young audiences in the San Diego area.

Jean Isaacs San Diego Dance Theater Announces Changes to Organization The Board of Directors of the Jean Isaacs San Diego Dance Theater is announcing several changes to our organization, including the imminent retirement of our long-time Artistic Director, Jean Isaacs. Ms. Isaacs will complete her long tenure with SDDT on January 31, 2021. In addition to Ms. Isaacs' retirement, due to impacts from COVID-19, SDDT has eliminated the position of Executive Director, held recently... by Trisha Gooch, and a new position of Associate Artistic Director has been created. The Board would like to thank Ms. Gooch for her work this past year, which helped to lay a financial foundation that will enable us to continue to teach online and create new dance work through the ongoing pandemic. We would like to welcome our new Associate Artistic Director, Ms. Terry Wilson, who will help facilitate organizational and artistic challenges over the next several months as we prepare for Ms. Isaacs' departure. We are also saying goodbye to our Financial Manager, Erica Tarassoff. Due to the COVID-19 crisis, Ms. Tarassoff has shifted her focus to her family. Dear Community, San Diego Dance Theater acknowledges the persistence of systemic racism and the centuries-long brutality against Black people. We hear and feel the anguish of the Black community, and grieve in solidarity. We are committed to learning, evolving, and re-defining our mission and goals for the future.
