San Anselmo Historical Museum 04.07.2021

From the archives. ca1935. Downtown San Anselmo had a large variety of stores that sold just about anything people needed. Most people walked or took the train to town and made a day of it, buying what was needed and walking away with an ice cream treat. This pin was probably given away as a promotion by Hoy’s record shop. #sananselmo #marinhistory

Then and Now. Swipe to left. 1907 San Anselmo train depot, showing the broad (freight) and narrow (commuter) gauge tracks as well as the raised third rail, which provided electric power for the commuter train. San Anselmo Creek flows under the track and road bridges in the foreground. Today’s southbound lanes of Sir Francis Drake Blvd now occupy the track space. #sananselmo #marinhistory

Then and Now. Swipe to left. ca1900. Montgomery Chapel on the corner of Bolinas Avenue and Richmond Road. San Francisco Theological Seminary in background. Alexander Montgomery, a San Francisco merchant, was one of the Seminary’s most important benefactors. His generous contribution of $250,000 enabled the Seminary construction to be started, and it was completed in 1892. A few years later, as he lay dying, he donated another $50,000 for the construction of this memorial chapel. Montgomery was buried inside in 1897.

Than and Now. Swipe to left. Yolanda Station ca1930. Corner of Saunders and Center Blvd. The train once ran down Center Blvd and Yolanda Station was the first stop after the Hub on the way to Fairfax. Many of the buildings near the station housed grocery stores, so folks could pick up dinner on the way home from work.#sananselmo #marinhistory

Then and Now. Swipe to left. ca1980 Pioneer Hall at 19-23 Ross Avenue - owned by the Odd Fellows. It was built early 1900’s. In the late 1800’s Ross Avenue was thought by many to be the future business district of San Anselmo, but by the early 1900’s most businesses had settled on San Anselmo Avenue. The Town Trustees met in this Hall for meetings until Town Hall was completed in 1911. #sananselmo #marinhistory

Then And Now. 102 Ross Ave, ca1900. The house is set back from the street, and the St Nicholas Orthodox Church is now in front of the home. The house was originally built around 1896 by Frederick Sproul Taylor, the youngest son of Samuel and Sarah Taylor. In 1956 the St Nicholas Church Community of San Rafael purchased the property. Services were held in the house until the 12th century style church was constructed in front in 1968. #marinhistory. #sananselmo

ca1928 From The Archives. San Anselmo’s baseball history goes back over 100 years. The first field was located just behind today’s Town Hall. For a detailed history, visit our website at sananselmohistory.org. This catcher’s mitt and the shoes in the adjacent photo belonged to George Anselmo Sousa. George played for the San Anselmo Merchants, the local semi-pro team which was organized in 1934. #marinhistory #sananselmo
