Great stuff! Did I mention that I am presently drafting a book that addresses the inverted epistemology of ignorance that so often frames such perspectives? I use both mission and state and National Park Service museum exhibitions to establish that many such representations only to minimize the Latino/Hispanic contributions to California history...and that despite the 39% of California's population that self-identifies as falling under the labels of Hispanic/Latino.

This is the video clip, dubbed into the Mallorcan language of Father Serra, of the Serra300 program that premiered this past week. This week, another production, by the Global "Eternal Word" Catholic Television Network (EWTN)...will premier, and my portion of the production is in Episode 2. In the meantime, I am happy to report that our Native American Heritage and Serra Tricentennial exhibitions, symposia, and publications have all been a wonderful success. Thanks to all who supported our efforts to that end...you guys are great!

Both Jennifer Lucido and I have manuscripts published in the current Boletín of the California Mission Studies Association. My paper regarding the archaeological discovery and recovery of the Serra Chapels of 1770 and 1772, titled "The Cross and the Spade," and Jennifer's paper regarding the butchering practices of the soldiers of the Royal Presidio of Monterey are both here!

For those who might be interested in obtaining either a print or digital version of the "Archaeology on the Edge of Empire" exhibition catalog, find it on www.magcloud.com. The exhibit catalog, like the exhibition itself, serves as a visual chronicle of Mission archaeology on the Monterey Bay for the period from 1995 to 2016.

On this day I was once again pleasantly surprised to receive word of a new video produced by the City of Monterey History Fest folks, and one which documents my work and those studies undertaken by the Royal Presidio Chapel Conservation Project team of which I was a part from 2006-2010. This is how my day started -- a private showing of the sunrise at the Mission a day before the Solstice, thanks to the ever-wonderful Benny Garcia. Just Benny ...and myself, with a couple of tourists straggling in at the last moment. The Mission will be open for the real Solstice tomorrow starting (I think) at about 6.15 with Ruben G. Mendoza giving a talk at about 6.30-6.45 or so. The sunrise itself is about 7.15-7.20 or so. This is a gorgeous event and well worth getting up for. Bundle up -- it is COLD! The picture in the Mission is taken from the choir loft. (No idea who to apologize to -- Joe Luis Cedillo, Jesse Huerta, Ryan Terry, Billy E Gillette II, Eric Gutierrez -- ? -- but I think I might have knocked the center light on the floor up there out of kilter as I was trying to get the shot.)
