San Dieguito Half Marathon/ 5K

To my many dedicated followers of the San Dieguito Half Marathon, It is with a great deal of regret to inform you that the event planned for next April from Qualcomm Stadium is cancelled. I have heard & read your comments regarding the new course from Qualcomm Stadium and you are all correct, it’s simply not San Dieguito. ... I’m afraid that Mission Valley is void of the hills, a scenic route, the encouragement from the Rancho Santa Fe residents and the volunteer support from the surrounding communities. I want to thank each and every one of you for the many years of support and participation you have given to one of the nation’s oldest and most beloved half marathons. This year would have been the 49th San Dieguito Half Marathon! We will focus in finding a new course for 2018 hoping to bring you another great half marathon. I want to also thank the race committee (San Diego area Hash House Harriers) and the many volunteers who have given so much of their time to make this event what it is. Additionally, I want to acknowledge the County Parks Society, the Qualcomm Stadium Staff, the City of San Diego and the San Diego Police Department for their continued support. For those of you who have registered for this event, you will be refunded your entry fee. To all our previous winners of the San Dieguito Half Marathon! We would like to invite you to return to the 49th annual event. We want to acknowledge our previous Champions such as you, that have made this event so outstanding in the running world.... As you have learned, the course location has changed to San Diego,to Qualcomm Stadium. It is a flat fast course (YUP we ironed out some hills) and we want to personally invite you to attend. To all our many supporters of our events throughout the years: I felt it was important to share with you the reasons for changing the San Dieguito Half Marathon course. The County Roads Department has required many changes to our San Dieguito Half course throughout the years, without asking for our input. ... The 2015 course change was given to us within 4 weeks of the event. For 2016 we requested to change the course back to the earlier course and it was denied. In 2016 we, along with the residents were informed that the residents were not allowed to leave their homes until the end of the event. We had always managed, along with CHP to assist any resident who needed to get out in all previous years. With this new request, our safety equipment company was required to place signage on every resident’s driveway 2 weeks before the event. The residents were not happy about this and they demanded for the signs to be removed. Our safety equipment company removed them per county roads request. Race day weekend County Roads requested for the signs to be placed again or the race would be cancelled. All of this resulted in several angry residents for not being able to get out of their homes and an astronomical invoice from our safety equipment company. So in review of how county roads handles their permit process and signage request, how local residents felt and the way our volunteer course marshals were treated, I felt it was best to review other options for this event. Unfortunately, all the explored routes that compared to San Dieguito were limited to 300 participants and/or a beer garden wasn’t allowed. We stayed with the event name because this is what it is currently called. The event name wasn’t always called San Dieguito when it first started, it was called the Poinsettia Half Marathon. There have been several course changes throughout the years but the major impact was the recent requirements from the San Diego County Public Works Department.
