San Diego County Recorder Society 09.03.2021

The San Diego County Recorder Society monthly meeting will be held this Saturday, April 20, 2018 at the Clairemont Lutheran Church, 4271 Clairemont Mesa Boulevard, San Diego, CA. The meeting is held in the music room, downstairs. Look for the children's playground and go down the ramp. Meeting will start with a warm-up session from 1:00 to 1:50 pm, to be followed by our regular session with guest conductor Dan Ratelle at 2pm. A native San Diegan, Daniel Ratelle earned a degre...e in Psychology at Santa Clara University, and then returned to San Diego to study music. At San Diego State University he was a vocal major as an undergraduate, sang and played period instruments with the Collegium Musicum there, and received his Master's Degree in Conducting and Early Music. Currently he teaches music part time at Mesa College, conducts the New City Sinfonia (a community chamber orchestra), directs the choir of the First Unitarian Universalist Church, and directs Pacific Camerata, an early music choral ensemble which he founded. He has served on the Board of the San Diego Early Music Society, as well as several terms on the national Board of the Unitarian Universalist Musicians Network. He was for eight years the Associate Conductor of the San Diego Master Chorale, and delivered a number of the "Words On Music" presentations for San Diego Symphony programs. In previous sessions with the San Diego Recorder Society, he has brought a wide variety of literature, from dances and motets to polychoral works of eight parts. See more

Cathe Sobke is a San Diego native. She hol...ds degrees in music composition and music theory from SDSU. She grew up playing piano, clarinet, and guitar, and was introduced to Early Music about 20 years ago. Her collection of early musical instruments includes many recorders, Renaissance flutes, krummhorns, cornettos, lutes, Baroque guitar, viola da gamba, and harpsichord. When she isn’t playing on her instruments (or playing tennis, hiking or cycling), she can be found teaching music classes at Southwestern College where she specializes in Aural Skills. Currently performing music from the Medieval, Renaissance and Baroque periods, she plays with local groups Kensington Baroque Orchestra, Dolce Dolore, Granada Consort, Musica Nova Antiqua, The Goliards, and Duo Lonato. Cathe has previously been a guest conductor of the SDCRS many times, and she always chooses a program of various music periods and composers that are enjoyable to play, listen to, and learn from. In some cases she provides her own arrangements of music from other composers. See more

The next San Diego County Recorder Society monthly meeting will be held Saturday, January 18, 2020. ****New Location**** in the third floor solarium at Wesley Palms, 2404 Loring St, San Diego, CA 92109. ****New Location**** ... Meeting will start with a warm-up session from 1:00 to 1:50 pm, to be followed by our regular session with guest conductor Cathe Sobke at 2pm. Cathe Sobke, an SDCRS favorite, will be the guest conductor for the meeting on January 18, 2020. Cathe Sobke is a San Diego native. She holds degrees in music composition and music theory from SDSU. San Diego County Recorder Society 23.09.2020

Due to the holiday season, the next San Diego County Recorder Society monthly meeting will be held on the second Saturday of this month. On Saturday, December 14, SDCRS will meet for a holiday play session from 2 4:30PM at Wesley Palms, 2404 Loring St, San Diego, CA 92109. Bring along your own stand, 10-12 copies of any music you would like the group to play, and any snacks or beverages you would like to share. If you plan to attend, please RSVP so that we have some idea of how many copies of music will be needed.

Meeting will start with a warm-up session from 1:00 to 1:50 pm, to be followed by our regular session with guest conductor Ulla Sinz at 2pm. Ulla was born and raised in Germany, and beg...an recorder studies at the age of seven with Renate Stoltenberg at the Institute of Music Leverkuesen near Cologne. In 1980 she won third prize in the Young Musicians Competition (Jugend Musiziert). Her musical training continued at the University of the Virgin Islands where she studied Applied Reeds, and at the New England Conservatory of Music where she studied Classical Guitar. Since immigrating to the United States in 1986, Ulla maintains a semiprofessional status as a featured soloist. Ulla currently performs with San Diego based groups such as Windsor Hills and Trio Lonato, both Baroque ensembles, and Kensington Baroque Orchestra. See more

Meeting will start with a warm-up session from 1:00 to 1:50 pm, to be followed by our regular session with guest conductor Dr. Stephen Sturk at 2pm. Dr. Sturk successfully juggles care...ers as conductor, composer, tenor, and teacher and has been a fixture on the San Diego music scene for nearly three decades. He has been conductor/music director of several important churches and community choirs in southern California, including the La Jolla Symphony Chorus (interim), San Clemente Choral Society, The Center Chorale, and Cappella Gloriana. Currently he is music director of St. Thomas of Canterbury Episcopal Church in Temecula. After serving on the music faculty of the University of San Diego (1993-1998), where he was director of the Choral Scholars Program, Dr. Sturk became the Founding Director of the Pacific Academy of Ecclesiastical Music (PACEM). Meeting will start with a warm-up session from 1:00 to 1:50 pm, to be followed by our regular session with guest conductor Ramon Negron Perez at 2pm. Born and raised in Puerto Rico, Ramon Negron ...began his musical career at the age of nine. He graduated cum laude with his bachelor of music in viola performance from the Puerto Rico Conservatory of Music. Currently an adjunct faculty member in the Department of Music at the University of San Diego, Mr. Negron formerly served as a faculty member at the Conservatory of Music of Puerto Rico and the School of Fine Arts in Carolina, Puerto Rico. He is also a former conductor of the Overture Strings of the San Diego Youth Symphony and Conservatory, where he collaborated as a community artist teacher of the Opus Project, inspired by the success of the El Sistema movement in Venezuela. Mr. Negron has been a member of the Puerto Rico Symphony Orchestra, has performed often as a soloist and at numerous festivals throughout the world, and has shared the stage with many nationally and internationally acclaimed musicians. In addition, Mr. Negron has served as principal viola of many orchestras. He currently conducts and performs with the San Diego Kensington Baroque Orchestra. See more
