Thank you all for your concern about the Bookshop closure. We at Samuel French, Inc. and the Concord family want you to know that you have been heard, and we appreciate the outpouring of support. We wish those sentiments were reflected in sales in recent years. Even so, the decision to close the store was not made lightly and occurred before the sale of Samuel French was concluded. We cannot continue to lose money - we need those resources to support writers and make theatre ...happen for as many people as possible. The plan had been for the Bookshop to shutter at the end of this month, however on the night of Monday, March 5, it was broken into and seriously vandalized. And earlier that day, several men deliberately intimidated a beloved member of our staff on the premises. The police require us to close the store pending their investigation and with our staff's safety in mind, we are unable to reopen it. Please note that Concord remains committed to the theatrical community in Los Angeles and around the world. Existing programs we will continue to nurture and expand include Playwrights Welcome (samfren.ch/PlaywrightsWelcome), where we work to provide free theatre tickets to playwrights; Script Relief (samfren.ch/EdTAScriptRelief), which donates scripts to educational programs that have lost libraries due to natural disasters; and Abbott (abbottreader.com), which provides Dramatists Guild members with free digital scripts. We would be happy to support a new LA store with favorable pricing and payment terms, as we do to other independent bookshops, which we have already been reaching out to in the area. We are also planning a substantial financial and script donation to libraries or similar local nonprofit institutions to help provide the community with access to the best of American theatre, and will be announcing those plans as soon as possible. Concord already makes significant donations to the Dramatists Guild Foundation, the American Theatre Wing, New Dramatists, the Stage Directors and Choreographers Foundation, MusiCares, and other nonprofit arts charities. If any of you would like to help, perhaps you can suggest local libraries and bookstores to which you would like us to reach out? You can email us at [email protected].
Our Bookshop was broken into and vandalized last night. It is closed pending police investigation until further notice.
Today, we announce the closing of our Bookshop at the end of March. Our deepest gratitude goes out to the dedicated staff and loyal customers who have made this place a beloved landmark for decades. Samuel French, Inc. looks forward to continuing to make theatre happen with all of you through our Samuel French UK Bookshop at London's Royal Court Theatre, as well as online, where our collection of play scripts and musical libretti are available.
Need to stock up on some good reads? Stop by the Bookshop for our Winter Sale!
As a reminder: our Bookshop will be closed in honor of Presidents' Day on Monday, February 18. Enjoy the weekend!
