Trying something new is scary. In scary times, all the more reason to do so. And if I can do it, so can you! I’ve never surfed before. It is intimidating. The waves are a lot larger than they look on shore. And I am not very good yet. But it is also thrilling. And each time I conquer a part of it, my fear shrinks a little bit. ... For many of my clients exercise is scary. It has been a long time since they have been active. They are older. They don’t want to overdo. Gyms full of very fit people intimidate them. I am not ignoring all the scary things happening now. But I do want to emphasize that inactivity makes everything worse. It hurts your immune system. It contributes to other underlying issues that make you more vulnerable. It makes you feel worse about your body, and in doing so, can contribute to depression. We live in a time of fear and anxiety. But activity can be an antidote to anxiety. Rather than thinking of exercise as something you MUST do, think of it as a remedy to stress. Just a walk be it on the beach or down your lane can provide relief. During the activity you choose, allow yourself to exist in the moment. While you walk or ride bikes or golf, let your eyes see what is in front of them. Feel the warmth of the sun. Notice little things the plants or the rocks. A...dmire the beauty you see. Watch the ripples on the water and the way the patterns change as the sun shines on it.
