According to the Veterans Administration, in 2014 only 40 percent of all veterans were enrolled in the VA health care system. In the VA’s 2015 veterans suicide study only veterans utilizing VA Healthcare were reported. One third of the national veteran suicide data was rejected due to coroners not stating suicide in their reports and 60% of veterans do not utilize the VA’s services. California is home to the highest population of veterans in the united states at approximately 2 million vets and based on those facts we would have to say in 2019 California has a serious veteran suicide epidemic on their hands. Of the 2 million veterans in California, 8.4 percent are unemployed, 7.6 percent live in poverty, 18.5 percent have a service connected disability and an estimated 11,000 are homeless. That is an estimated 701,000 California veterans in need of some compassion.
