President Nelsen shared the following message today with the campus community: Every Commencement we pause to celebrate our veterans who are graduating and the veterans in the stands. It is a moving and humbling moment. Campus will be closed tomorrow, Wednesday, Nov. 11, in observance of our veterans. I hope you will join me in recognizing and honoring the members of our Hornet Family and all of those who have served and sacrificed for our country. The day is especially poig...nant this year as we just witnessed a historic election where more than 146 million Americans exercised their civil right to vote. Fair and free elections are the heart of our democracy, and those who served and are currently serving help ensure that these freedoms are protected. I am grateful for your service, and I hope you enjoy a peaceful Veterans Day. Stingers Up!
Sac State alum Paul Coccovillo was moved by the death of a friend’s brother to start the George Floyd Emergency Endowment Fund, which is aimed at helping students, particularly students of color, experiencing unexpected financial crises. It is another example of the Hornet Family looking out for each other and making a difference.
"Feed a Family and Fight the Flu": This Thursday, no-cost flu shots will be offered to the campus community, alumni, retirees, and members of the general public who make a canned-food or other donation. (Students can receive shots without a donation.) These gifts will be added to donations received at the ASI Thanksgiving Food Baskets Drive, which will be 9 a.m. to noon in Parking Lot 7 near the Children’s Center. Big thanks to our Nursing students who will be administering vaccinations at the drive-through clinic from 8 a.m. to noon in Parking Structure 3. Please join us in making the holiday healthier and happier for the Hornet Family.
Faculty excellence: Cheers for Sac State Art Education Professor Veronica Hicks, newly honored by the California Art Education Association for her work in helping prepare new teachers to connect with members of the disability community. We’re so proud to join that statewide organization in calling her the Special Needs Art Educator of the Year!

Campus Update: The COVID-19 Regional Stay at Home Order goes into effect in the greater Sacramento area at midnight tonight. Because of steps taken last month to depopulate the campus, the order will have minimal effect on Sac State operations, President Nelsen said today in a campus message. Among the details: Face-to-face classes scheduled today and Friday may meet without changes. There will be no changes to finals. Residence halls, the Hornet Bookstore, and the ASI Childr...en’s Center remain open. Student Health and Counseling Services remains open. Employees who are already teleworking will continue to do so, and managers will reassess which employees need to report physically to campus. All health and safety protocols, including daily self-screening for those coming to campus, will remain in place. We have worked hard to keep the Hornet Family safe, the President said. And we will continue to do so.
The annual Associated Students, Inc., Thanksgiving Food Basket Drive is a proud Sac State tradition, and this year’s pandemic-influenced version features drive-through donations on campus. This year’s goal is to provide Thanksgiving dinner fixings for at least 150 Sac State students and their families as well as baskets for local nonprofits helping families in need. This week, you can help by bringing items on the Thanksgiving Basket list to Parking Lot 7, near the ASI Child...ren’s Center, between 9 a.m. and noon Thursday, Nov. 12. For the grocery list and other ways to give, check out our story at https://sacstate.me/365k3VH. Thank you for caring, Hornet Family! Andrea Price
Sacramento State is joining colleges and universities across the country this week in a celebration of first-generation students’ success and perseverance. About one-third of our students identify as first-generation, meaning neither of their parents graduated college.
#StingersUp for Jayson! From the Sacramento Bee's Joe Davidson: "The most active fellow on the Sacramento State practice field Tuesday was the smallest one. "It was Jayson Hellman, wearing a green jersey No. 12, his last name splashed across the back."
The wait for results from Tuesday’s election continues to challenge us all, regardless of where we are on the political spectrum. Help is available for members of the Hornet Family dealing with anxiety at this moment. Student Health & Counseling Services (for students) and the Employee Assistance Program (for faculty and staff) are resources for Hornets who need to speak with somebody while things get sorted out. And, as President Nelsen says in a message today to the campus community, We will define our future together. Stingers Up!
Hundreds of students rely on ASI's Food Pantry to feed themselves and their families. Amid a difficult year, ASI’s ambitious Thanksgiving Food Basket Drive aims to, with donors’ generous help, make a happy holiday not just for them but for families in need throughout the Sacramento region.
Democracy in action: Today is a historic Election Day, and Sac State is proudly playing its part in getting out the vote by hosting one of Sacramento County’s Vote Centers. The center in Modoc Hall will be open till 8 p.m. and as a reminder, if you’re in line to vote at that time, you’ll be able to cast your ballot. Thank you to our Student Safety Ambassadors, who are ensuring that COVID-19 health and safety protocols are observed at the center. If you haven’t yet voted, please be sure to make your voice heard! #HornetsVote
It's Election Day, Hornets last chance to vote! Visit the Vote Center on campus at Modoc Hall until 8 p.m. or at a polling place near you. Safety Ambassadors are on-site to help ensure a safe voting experience. Your voice is important, make sure it's heard! Sacramento State/Andrea Price & Jessica Vernone
This year marks the 100th anniversary of the ratification of the 19th Amendment, which extended the right to vote to women. Though many events were cancelled due to COVID-19, Sac State has continued to celebrate the transformative milestone and reflect on the progress that still needs to be made.
Distinguished Alumni Awards: Alyssa Nakken smashed glass ceilings and made international headlines this summer as the first female full-time coach in Major League Baseball history. The former Hornet softball captain says Sacramento State is where she learned the leadership and interpersonal skills to succeed at baseball's highest level.
Jameel Pugh's childhood was defined by dominance on the basketball court and struggles in the classroom, but he had mentors who pushed him forward to a college degree. Now, the former Sac State hoops star is shaping the lives of today’s high school students through an innovative college and career readiness program that has seen remarkable results. #MadeAtSacState
