This Saturday, we are excited to have Sincee J. Daniels teach a Masterclass to our YPC students on video-auditions! Like so many artists in COVID, he found himself with no theatre opportunities and was challenged to adapt to a world where auditions would need to be through video self-tape. As this has become the New Normal, Sincee's Masterclass will highlight what it takes to prepare sharp, professional, eye-catching videos for film, tv, commercial, and even theatre and musical theatre! We are delighted to have Sincee give his insight to the YPC students and help them learn and grow in an ever-changing industry!

Flashback Friday! Curtains Up is an annual event that we typically host in November, celebrating the work of the School of the Arts and raising money for our various programs to help integrate professional theatre and arts education. Due to COVID-19, we have rescheduled the Curtains Up event to April, but we have worked to create additional performance opportunities online to showcase the student's hard work! We have 5 student chairs for the 2021 Curtains Up event, and they a...re working diligently to create a plan of exciting events, performances, raffles, and more! We miss having the students come together every Saturday to build decorations, collect donations, and rehearse their class numbers, but we are excited to bring them all back in the Spring for this annual event! As a student-led event, Curtains Up gives the students a chance to build their leadership and business skills, and create professional connections in our community. If you are interested in becoming a sponsor or partner for Curtains Up 2021, please email Miranda Lawson at [email protected]. We will start collecting in-kind donations and raffle prizes soon! If you would like to make a donation to the School of the Arts, you can do so below! See more

The deadline for STC’s New Works Play Festival - Diverse & Unheard Voices is now passed. We are excited not only with the number of submissions by local writers, but with the diversity and strength of the ideas and writing samples. Topics that examine race, culture, money, love and friendship delivered through black comedy, dramatic realism and even time travel are among the many submission we received. We look forward to sharing the story topics and introducing you to the amazing storytellers on November 15, 2020, when we announce our finalists. Over the next several months, you’ll have the opportunity to follow our finalists on social media as they create their plays in preparation for the festival March 3-7, 2021.

This weekend, Nicole Sterling will be teaching a masterclass for our YPC students about the importance of understudies and how to fulfill that role in a professional manner! We are excited to have Nicole back with us for this class, and we are proud to present a masterclass on this subject to our students. Understudies are a crucial role in any show, and can require a lot of extra work from actors. Learning how to handle the role is an important step in the YPC student's professional journey!

We are excited to host our next PEC Masterclass with dancer and choreographer, Jerald Bolden! Jerald will lead our PEC students and introduce them to styles and techniques created by choreographers and dancers of color. Jerald Bolden, originally from Ventura County, began dancing and singing in musical theater at an early age through the Actor’s Repertory Theatre of Simi Valley. There he danced in The Wiz, Alice in Wonderland, and A Christmas Carol. In high school he began ...to choreograph such musicals as Into The Woods, and Oklahoma. In seasons past, Jerald choreographed STC Ensemble’s successful Main Stage Production of You’re a Good Man Charlie Brown. Jerald has also been seen in Magic Circle’s production of A Chorus Line, and Fair Oaks Theatre Festival Production of Seussical The Musical. In 2019, Jerald choreographed Mary Poppins, Jr. and in 2020 he choreographed The Musical Adventures of Oliver Twist, both for STC’s Ensemble Program. He currently teaches dance in STC’s YPC program. We are very excited to introduce our new School Partnership Program Manager, Joanna Johnson. While we will greatly miss our former SPP Manager, Franchesca Sonoyama, we are so proud of the dedication and growth she put into the SPP program. We wish her the best of luck with her future endeavors, and we are excited to continue her work with Joanna as the new Program Manager. Joanna will be overseeing multiple school programs that are taking place virtually in the greater-Sacra...mento area. She will also help expand the virtual programming and after-school programming across more schools in the area! "I am so incredibly excited to be working with STC's School Partnership Program. I have a background in education, having taught preschool for 10 years and loving every minute of it. I also have a deep passion for theatre. I have acted in a few plays around Sacramento, and I usually have a musical playing in my car. I am so happy to have a job that marries both of my passions. I am looking forward to being able to help fuel the excitement for theatre to schools across Sacramento."

For years, STC has brought Sacramento new works by local artists, and our world-premiere of The Donner Party in 2017 is a perfect example! Specially commissioned and developed by STC, this dramatic new musical chronicled the true story of the harrowing travels of pioneers who faced unspeakable trials when trapped in the high Sierra Nevada in the winter of 1846 to 1847. Written by Eric Rockwell and Margaret Rose, California natives and authors of STC’s 2013 production of A Little Princess, this world premiere musical continued STC’s commitment to produce new, locally-relevant works each season. Today, we look back on the challenges these pioneers faced, and reflect on what we are all standing up to in the world today. We strive to meet the challenges of today, and you can support STC to help us moving forward.

STC has spent decades being a leader in arts integration and theater in the Sacramento region, and while our stages may be dark, we continue to provide top tier arts education to students. Our Young Professionals Conservatory and Pre-Professional Ensemble Company have continued classes virtually during the shelter-in-place orders; we hosted virtual summer camp; we continue to provide our Saturday Acting Classes to the general public virtually, and we are beginning to integrat...e virtual theater classes into after-school programs in the Sacramento City Unified School District. The most significant reason we are able to adapt and stay strong during this time is our donors. Sponsorships and donations allow us to change the arts and impact our future generation of theatre artists. We would like to thank each and every one of you who helps us to reach those students and be a positive influence in their lives through the magic of theatre. You can continue to support STC and our mission to be the leader in integrating professional theatre with theatre arts education by making a donation today!
