It’s #FlashbackFriday! This time we’re throwing it back to the no-so-distant past when the lupine super bloom at Folsom Lake had everyone’s attention in the spring. This beautiful shot was taken by Todd DeVore from our Architectural Design Section.

DID YOU KNOW that The National Guard is 140 years older than the United States? Dwarfing the lifespan of the Army itself (founded in 1775), the National Guard traces its beginnings to December 13, 1636, when the Massachusetts Bay Colony organized the first militia regiments in the American colonies. These units were the forerunners of today’s National Guard, which continues to fulfill important roles on U.S. soil and abroad. Happy Birthday, Soldiers!

Throwing it back just a bit to October, when we released this video on the American River Common Features project! The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, California’s Central Valley Flood Protection Board, California Department of Water Resources, and the Sacramento Area Flood Control Agency have made tremendous progress in reducing the flood risk for the Greater Sacramento Area, but more work remains. Through the Bipartisan Budget Act, the Corps has received full upfront funding to modernize Sacramento's aging flood infrastructure. This allows us to more efficiently implement nearly $1.8 billion in upgrades to Sacramento's flood risk management system. WATCH: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jBrtzsjVCVM

The USACE mission in four states affected by #HurricaneLaura is wrapping up! This is the final update from U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Headquarters, showing the achievements of the emergency response team operating in close coordination with FEMA Federal Emergency Management Agency over the last 70 days. We’d like to thank the members of the entire interagency response team for the work accomplished during and after the storm, including temporary roofing for residents and assessments of power and water infrastructure. Our thoughts and prayers will still be with the people of Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, and Texas as they continue to rebuild.

On his windshield tour of Sacramento District projects in California’s Central Valley recently, USACE South Pacific Division Commander Brig. Gen. Paul Owen got an up-close look at the Isabella Dam Safety Modification Project and was given the honor of detonating a blast for excavation of the new emergency spillway. In addition, the mega-project also includes 16-foot crest raises to both the main and auxiliary dams and construction of an approximately 1,100-foot-wide concrete Labyrinth Weir across the mouth of the new emergency spillway, among other improvements.

Like almost everything else, Halloween will be different this year. But you can still be spooky AND safe by incorporating a mask into your costume, keeping six feet between you and other trick-or-treaters, and following the rest of the CDC’s recommendations at https://www.cdc.gov//daily-life-co/holidays/halloween.html. Keep the frights fun! Protect yourself and your family.

Yosemite Valley has experienced major floods in 1937, 1950, 1955, 1964, and 1997. Flood fighting (including sandbagging as shown in the image from 1937) and recovery are collaborative, interagency efforts! Following the destruction of the 1997 flood, Yosemite National Park recovery efforts were completed with help from National Park Service, Federal Highway Administration, and Denver Service Center. Trails throughout the park were restored in partnership with CA Conservation ...Corps, and water infrastructure was rebuilt with partnership from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. Although these agencies --as well as the California Department of Water Resources-- are always working to reduce flood risk, everyone needs to be personally prepared for a flood. Take action by understanding your personal flood risk, making an emergency plan with your family, and purchasing flood insurance. Flood management across the state and country continues to be an interagency effort. USACE South Pacific Division Commander Brig. Gen. Paul Owen dropped in on our Tule River Spillway Enlargement Project at Success Lake last week to get a project update and site tour his first visit to the site since taking command of SPD earlier this year. The project will eventually widen the spillway by approximately 160 feet and construct a 10-foot-high concrete Ogee Weir across the spillway, among other improvements, and will increase storage capacity in the reservoir by 28,000 acre-feet. The project is expected to be complete in 2023.
