Although a tropical island can’t be a part of our actual time off, Sacramento Vocal Music will be on vacation from July 13 to July 26, 2020. James and Jia-Min wish you a great two weeks off!

SACRAMENTO VOCAL MUSIC CHANGES DURING COVID 19 VIRUS PANDEMIC: During this difficult time, Sacramento Vocal Music (SVM) has shifted lessons from in-person instruction to Zoom-based electronic lessons. We are so grateful for our students’ patience, and actual enthusiasm, for this new method of teaching. When the threat of exposure has been determined by the National Institutes of Health to be reduced to safe, we will reinstate in-person lessons. We continue to accept new students. Please contact Jia-Min at (530) 868-6786 to schedule your lessons. Thank you!

Hello, SVMers! We have a notice about the COVID-19 (Corona) virus. This Friday, March 13, will be the last in-person lessons for a time. After serious discussions with several people, James has decided to move his Spring vacation to the week of Monday, March 16th through Friday, March 20th. As you may know, James meets three of the high risk categories regarding the COVID-19 (Corona) virus. As community transmission grows, the risk to his and his husband, David’s health inc...reases. Following next week, we may, for a time, move to Messenger/Facetime/Skype lessons until the risk is over. If we decide to do that, we will ensure everyone has a piano version of their pieces with which to sing during the lesson. Another alternative is to take everyone’s temperature with a no-touch thermometer before every lesson, along with several health questions. If a student or family objects to this alternative, we can certainly continue for a short time with electronic visits. Tuition remains the same, unless we have to stop lessons altogether for a time. At this time, this is not the case. We will keep you posted as new information develops. Our goal is to return to in-person lessons as soon as possible. We’re sorry for having to make this temporary change, but the risks are too great not to do so. Incidentally, because of the risks, James has agreed with Woodland Opera House to step down as the vocal director for Bye, Bye Birdie. Please follow the instructions of public health officials to reduce contact with others, maintain exceptionally high hygiene standards, and be patient as the public health community, with our help, gets this situation under control. Fortunately, young people are more likely to have a mild case if they are diagnosed with COVID-19, but they must be vigilant not to pass it on to those are highest risk, including those people who are 60+, people with compromised immune systems, and people who have underlying medical conditions, especially those which are respiratory in nature. Thank you for your patience. Get rest, with plenty of fluids next week. We’ll see you soon. Warmly, James and Jia-Min James C. Glica-Hernandez Owner-Educator Sacramento Vocal Music

Technique is vital to singing throughout one’s lifetime. Healthy technique prevents myriad issues from arising due to strain and fatigue. Equally important is learning the strategies toward effective storytelling through melody and lyrics. A singer must deconstruct the lyrics and musical phrases, and make specific choices, which create the emotional beats throughout the piece.
