Does my strabismus put me at risk for any eye disease? It could. A new study published in the British Journal of Ophthalmology found that Korean patients with an esodeviation are seven times more likely to develop primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG).... Tell me about the study: The study reviewed more than 11,000 participants 20 years of age or older in the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey database between 2010 and 2011. All participants received a comprehensive eye exam including ocular motility assessment. What did they find? Patients with clinically significant esodeviation (greater than 10 PD) had a much higher prevalence of POAG (12.32%) than those without clinically significant esodeviation (3.14%). Why would this be? One theory is that ocular adduction induces greater strain on the temporal optic nerve head and peripapillary tissues, which makes eyes with esodeviation more vulnerable to POAG.
