Guam, 1943: Doberman Peppy was listed as missing in the jungle for three days during front-line action before he made his way back to camp. A bullet fired by a ...Japanese sniper had pierced his left ear and lodged in his skull, but it was successfully removed. Before he went to the Pacific, Peppy had almost not made it out of training after he was bitten by a cottonmouth snake, but doctors were able to curb the swelling. He is pictured here on Guam with his handler, Private First Class Ben Goldblatt. Capt. Putney originally thought the skinny 19-year-old New Englander made a funny pair with the 90-pound Doberman, but if the intimacy of the image is any indication, they had formed quite the team. --- Image from the exhibition "Devil Dogs: The Daring Dobermans of World War II, compiled by the AKC Library & Archives for a special Memorial Day exhibit at The AKC Museum of the Dog, May 2019.

California Bill Dead! Patti Strand of NAIA writes: California dog enthusiasts should celebrate tonight! ... AB 702, the breeder permit bill, has just been pulled from tomorrow's hearing in the Assembly Business and Professions Committee by the author. AB 702 is now a two-year bill. This is a huge victory for everyone involved. Thank you to everyone who wrote and called their assemblymembers and to all the great groups that worked on this bill so hard: AKC, CalAnimals, and a broad coalition of opposition groups. Special thanks also to our lobbyist, Kathy Lynch for helping to organize the opposition. We are at the beginning of a two-year legislative cycle so converting this bill to a two-year bill means that it is dead for this year. It's possible for it to be changed and brought back next year. Thank you all!
