Songs for the Household. R. Worthington, 1882. Hardcover, 258pp. 7x5. Green boards with black embossed patterns on front and spine with gilt title panels on front and spine. Gilt to edges of textblock. Frontispiece illustration with protective tissue leaf. Amazing, beautiful, rare 19th century book of hymns: Lyra Germanica: Hymns for the Sundays and chief festivals of the Christian year sacred poetry; mostly translated from the German by Catherine Winkworth. Per the ...preface, The following hymns are selected from the Chevalier Bunfen’s ‘Verfuch eines allgemeinen Gefang und Gebetbuchs,’ published in 1833. From the large number there given, about nine hundred, little more than one hundred have been chosen. This selection contains many of those best known and loved in Germany, but in a work of this size it is impossible to include all that have become classical in that home of Christian poetry. In excellent condition - gilt on boards and edges of textblock remains bright. Boards show some wear to bottom edges and water staining to bottom of rear. Bindings is tight and pages are clean, bright and unmarked but for a few smudges here and there. Front free endpaper has cursive pencilled gift inscription 1887. Dinners That Wait by Betty Wason, with line drawings by Margot Tomes. Doubleday & Company, Inc., 1954. Hardcover, 217pp. 8x5. Green boards with red titles and yellow mushroom illustration on spine. Some b/w illustrations throughout. Dust jacket in protective cover. Fantastic vintage midcentury cookbook first edition, NOT the 1962 reprint penned by a forgotten heroine of American journalism for the hostess and party-maker. It is a well-known fact that both the cook-...hostess and her guests will enjoy a dinner more if she can spend a leisurely moment with them before eating. But, unfortunately, many a cook is up to her elbows at this time in dinner preparations while her guests try to entertain themselves. Betty Wason’s new cookbook offers a perfect solution to that problem. Every recipe has been tested and timed so that everything can be prepared beforehand for serving at the proper moment. And each step in the 74 complete recipes has been worked out according to a timetable that sees you safely through to after-dinner coffee without so much as an anxious glance. Wason (1912-2001) was an American author and broadcast journalist; a pioneer, with such others as Mary Marvin Breckinridge and Sigrid Schultz, of female journalism in the United States. She worked for and with Edward R. Murrow during World War II, although despite her significant contributions, she and a few others were rarely recognized in the famed group of war correspondents known as the Murrow Boys. She also wrote numerous books on food and cooking from the 1940s through 1981. In excellent condition boards are clean and bright, showing slight wear to top and bottom of spine. Binding is tight, and pages, are clean, bright, and unmarked though there’s one stain to the long end of the textblock. Unclipped dust jacket has some rubbing to surfaces and wear to corners and edges, including two 1 losses at top of rear and a much smaller loss to outer top corner of front. Great Captain: The Lincoln Trilogy by Honore Morrow. William Morrow and Company, 1930s Book Club Edition. Hardcover, 668pp. 8x6. Beige boards with blue titles on spine. Dust jacket in protective cover. Three novels about Abraham Lincoln from a renowned authority on our transformative 16th President of the United States. It is fitting that Mrs. Morrow’s Lincoln novels should be gathered together as a trilogy Great Captain. Not only are they important Americana but they... are among the best-loved novels of the last decade. Great Captain is the story of Abraham Lincoln all through his administration from the beginning of the Civil war down to the tragic moment of his assassination. Book One, Forever Free, shows the first years in the White House up to the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation. Book Two, With Malice Toward None, opens with the year 1863 and closes with the return of Abraham Lincoln to Washington from Virginia after the fall of Richmond. Book Three, The Last Full Measure, brings the chronicle of Lincoln down to the moment of his death. The people who lived in that exciting time are singularly vivid and colorful. There is Lincoln great statesman, greater human being; his most tragic moments lightened by his irrepressible humor; there is Mary Lincoln, excitable and high-strung, but very lovable; there are the children especially Tad. One of the most thrilling characters is the Confederate spy, ‘Lady’ Ford, social secretary to the President’s wife. And the men are strongly contrasted, from the dashing General McClellan to Charles Sumner, the radical, beloved of Lincoln; from Secretary Stanton to John Wilkes Booth, debonair and mad. Honore Morrow is recognized as an authority on Lincoln. To her authentic historical knowledge, she adds the qualities of a great story teller. The personalities of the day come before us in new vitality. The movement of history the Civil War which united them is rich in situation and emotion. Above all, the great figure of Lincoln looms unforgettable, lovable and life-like. Boards are in excellent condition with no appreciable wear or dirt. Binding is tight and pages are clean, bright and unmarked but for penciled numerals on upper right corner of endpaper and former owner’s name and address in ink on inside of front free endpaper. A French ABC by Francine Legrand Dauphin. Coward-McCann Inc., 1947. Hardcover, pages not numbered. 10x7. Red cloth boards with blue cross-hatch pattern and lettering on front, title on spine. Color illustrations on endpapers and throughout the book. No jacket. A lovely alphabet primer in French and English, with adorable color illustrations on every page. The purpose of this book is to teach children (and maybe some adults!) the French alphabet, together with some word...s made up, in each case, of the letter being studied. The idea of teaching an alphabet, together with words and phrases in this way, is not a novel one, but the drawings here are novel in that they most nearly approach the kind of drawing a clever, imaginative child would do for himself if he were able. In fact, the world, as it is expressed in this book, is seen largely as a child would see it, and it is for that reason that the drawings have the freshness and naivete which charms not only children but grown-ups who consent to turn the pages." In very good condition. Boards have some wear and bumping to corners and a faint water stain on the front, but binding is tight and age-toned pages are clean and unmarked. As always, feel free to message us if you want more details or photos.

Rare, signed-at-publication volume of one of the most ...lauded works of Vietnam War literature, which sold more than two million copies worldwide and was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize and National Book Critics Circle Award. The Things They Carried works its magic at many levels. On the surface it is a sequence of award-winning stories about a platoon of young foot soldiers caught up in the madness of the Vietnam War. At the same time, The Things They Carried has the cumulative power and unity of a novel, with recurring characters and interwoven strands of plot and theme. Each chapter flows into the next. Each story echoes off other stories. And on a third level, this amazing book is bound together by Tim O’Brien’s own voice and character as a twenty-three-year-old foot soldier and as a forty-three-year-old writer recreating that experience. Though Vietnam is central to The Things They Carried, this is not simply a book about war. It is a book about the human heart, abou the terrible weight of those things all of us carry through our lives. In excellent, never-read condition.
