(Hayward, California): The 100th Rowell Ranch Pro Rodeo scheduled to take place May 15-17, 2020 will be postponed to 2021 due to COVID-19. Since its beginning the historic East Bay event has been a time for friends and neighbors to come together and celebrate our community and our history. The nonprofit rodeo association supports numerous local charities through proceeds from the event annually. During this time of uncertainty, it is critical that we focus on the safety and well-being of our friends and neighbors. We will get through this time by working together as we look forward to celebrating the 100th Rowell Ranch Pro Rodeo next year. The 100th Rowell Ranch Pro Rodeo is now scheduled for May 14-16, 2021 at the historic Rowell Ranch Rodeo Park off of Highway 580 in Hayward/Castro Valley. We thank Supervisor Haggerty and Supervisor Miley for the time they took to learn more about rodeo and their vote against the ban of mutton busting in Alameda County. A final vote on the Alameda County ordinanc...e to ban mutton busting (sheep riding) will take place on Tuesday, November 19. It’s never too late to have your voice heard! FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Wednesday, October 30, 2019 Statement by Rowell Ranch Pro Rodeo October 30, 2019 Re: Alameda County Board of Supervisors Vote to Ban Mutton Busting... We are disappointed by the decision of the Alameda County Board of Supervisors to ban mutton busting. We hope their focus on this issue only illustrates a lack of understanding about rodeo events and not an overall lack of support for the agricultural industry that contributes significantly to the Alameda County economy. The new ordinance was made against the expert advice of the County’s own Agricultural Advisory Committee (a committee that includes experts appointed by each Supervisor to represent their district) and without review by the Castro Valley MAC board. The full input of the Rowell Ranch Pro Rodeo Committee was never considered. The item was originally put on the agenda in January 2019 by Supervisor Chan and Supervisor Valle, without either office contacting the rodeo committee prior to the meeting to request their official participation. Mutton busting is an event that gives children the opportunity to experience the community’s rural ranching heritage and the sport of rodeo under safe, controlled conditions. The Alameda County Sheriff and County Animal Control have never issued a report against the rodeo. Supervisors Chan, Valle and Carson did not attend the Rowell Ranch Pro Rodeo and thus chose to make their decision without any firsthand knowledge. The Rowell Ranch Pro Rodeo is in Nate Miley’s Supervisorial District. See more
