This past Saturday was World Polio Day! Rotarians have worked tirelessly for 75 years to help immunize 2.5 billion children against polio - bringing the world closer to eradicating this deadly disease. Since 1988, we've seen a worldwide reduction in polio cases of 99.9%. For more than three years, we've seen wild polio cases in only two countries, Afghanistan and Pakistan. This year, Africa has been declared free of the wild poliovirus! ... We had a wonderful presentation today from Lafayette Vice Mayor Susan Candell, about the new Equity & Inclusion Task Force. The task force has listened at several community meetings over the past months to the concerns of residents about racism and instances of lack of inclusion as well as to many ideas put forth by residents on how to address diversity in the city. Thank you to Susan, as well as our club Rotarians, for a thoughtful discussion at our meeting today on such an important topic!

We all learned so much from our Rotary Meeting speaker this past week! Steven King (Tekhnologia) discussed the trends in 5 different areas of Technology that, when combined, will allow smart devices from Next Thermostats to self-driving vehicles to interact and enable the creation of new Services, such as Transportation As A Service (TAAS). These changes will have impacts on existing businesses and consumers, both positive and negative, and those should also be considered as we more forward with implementation. Thank you Steven for a fascinating presentation at our Rotary Meeting!

Have you heard of micro-loans before? Business loans as small as $75 to just a few hundred dollars, can help a woman in the Honduras achieve economic self-sufficiency! We were thrilled to have Janet Lautenberger, Board Member of the Adelante Foundation speak at our Rotary Meeting yesterday. 60% of Honduras lives below the poverty line, of which women are among the most vulnerable groups. The Foundation provides microloans to women to start or support their local business ende...avors. Currently, the Adelante Foundation loans to over 6,000 women, and the payback rate is 93%! A unique aspect of Adelante Foundation's work is the Solidarity Group Loan. A solidarity group is comprised of 3 to 8 women from a community who have built enough trust to invest in improving their livelihoods together. In this character-based lending model, women serve as each other’s collateral in place of traditional collateralized loans. While each borrower receives their own amount, the entire group is responsible for collective repayment. The women make payments every two weeks and attend bi-weekly assembly meetings, where they receive business education lessons. In total, over $2.6 million has been disbursed into the community to support women in the community break out of the poverty cycle! Thank you Janet for speaking at our meeting!
