‘Where’s My Refund?’ remains easiest way to check tax refund status The Internal Revenue Service today reminds taxpayers that the easiest way to check on a tax refund is Where’s My Refund?, an online tool available at IRS.gov and through the IRS2Go app. The fastest way to get a refund is to use IRS e-file and direct deposit. Or just call me 619-743-7289, I'll get it done!

Here’s what people should know about taking early withdrawals from retirement plans Taxpayers may need to take money out of their individual retirement account or retirement plan early. However, this can trigger an additional tax on top of other income tax they may owe. Here are a few key things for taxpayers to know: Early Withdrawals. An early withdrawal normally is taking cash out of a retirement plan before the taxpayer is 59 years old.... Additional Tax. The IRS charges a 10 percent penalty on early withdrawals from most qualified retirement plans. There are some exceptions to this rule. Nontaxable Withdrawals. The additional tax does not apply to nontaxable withdrawals. These include withdrawals of contributions that taxpayers paid tax on before they put them into the retirement plan. Rollovers are a nontaxable withdrawal. A rollover happens when taxpayers take cash or other assets from one retirement plan and put the money in another plan within 60 days. A rollover can also happen when they direct their plan administrator to make the payment directly to another retirement plan or to an IRA. UPDATE FOR CONSUMERS FROM THE IRS: Don’t be victim to a ‘ghost’ tax return preparer! WASHINGTON Today, towards the end of the second full week of the 2019 tax filing season, the Internal Revenue Service warned taxpayers to avoid unethical tax return preparers, known as ghost preparers.... By law, anyone who is paid to prepare or assist in preparing federal tax returns must have a valid 2019 Preparer Tax Identification Number, or PTIN. Paid preparers must sign the return and include their PTIN. But ‘ghost’ preparers do not sign the return. Instead, they print the return and tell the taxpayer to sign and mail it to the IRS. Or, for e-filed returns, they prepare but refuse to digitally sign it as the paid preparer. According to the IRS, similar to other tax preparation schemes, dishonest and unscrupulous ghost tax return preparers look to make a fast buck by promising a big refund or charging fees based on a percentage of the refund. These scammers hurt honest taxpayers who are simply trying to do the right thing and file a legitimate tax return. Ghost tax return preparers may also: Require payment in cash only and not provide a receipt. Invent income to erroneously qualify their clients for tax credits or claim fake deductions to boost their refunds. Direct refunds into their own bank account rather than the taxpayer’s account. The IRS urges taxpayers to review their tax return carefully before signing and ask questions if something is not clear. And for any direct deposit refund, taxpayers should make sure both the routing and bank account number on the completed tax return are correct. The IRS offers tips to help taxpayers choose a tax return preparer wisely. The Choosing a Tax Professional page has information about tax preparer credentials and qualifications. The IRS Directory of Federal Tax Return Preparers with Credentials and Select Qualifications can help identify many preparers by type of credential or qualification. Taxpayers can report abusive tax preparers to the IRS. Use Form 14157, Complaint: Tax Return Preparer. If a taxpayer suspects a tax preparer filed or changed their tax return without their consent, they should file Form 14157-A, Tax Return Preparer Fraud or Misconduct Affidavit. 225 Third Ave Ste E Chula Vista CA 91910 #1 TAX INFORMATION for your SMALL BUSINESS / SELF-EMPLOYED If you’re self-employed, you obtain Social Security and Medicare coverage through the payment of self-employment tax. These are figured on Schedule C .... If your net earnings from self-employment equal $400 or more, you must do both of these: Report all on Schedule C Pay self-employment tax This is true regardless of your age, and even if you’re receiving Social Security benefits. For 2018, the self-employment tax rate is normally 15.3%. The rate is made up of both of these: 12.4% Social Security tax 2.9% Medicare tax For 2018, the maximum amount subject to Social Security tax is $118,500. However, all self-employment income in excess of $400 is subject to Medicare tax. To figure net earnings from self-employment, multiply your net business profit by 92.35%. You use this percentage since an employee is only required to pay one of these: 1/2 of Social Security and Medicare taxes 7.65% of wage income A self-employed individual must pay both halves, or 15.3%. So, the law equalizes the tax burden by reducing the income subject to tax by 7.65%. Here’s the formula: 100% 7.65% = 92.35% You can deduct the employer portion of your self-employment tax as an adjustment to income on Form 1040. The amount you can deduct is usually 1/2 of the employer portion. This decreases your taxable income and, as a result, your federal income tax.
