Happy Halloween from the RPD Care Bear Crew! Don’t forget to brush and floss your fangs

Rocklin Pediatric Dentistry 04.11.2020

With Halloween comes lots of goodies! The sugar in those yummy treats can play tricks on your teeth if you’re not careful. It is important to note that not all candy is created equal! Chocolate is one of the better candy choices because it melts away from your teeth more easily than other types of sticky candy. Don’t forget to floss once and brush twice a day!

Space maintainers help hold space for permanent teeth when a baby tooth has fallen out or been extracted prematurely. Space maintainers come in different shapes and sizes and assist in minimizing future orthodontic needs. Space maintainers are left in place until the permanent tooth is ready to erupt into the mouth.

Tooth-colored fillings are made of a durable material called composite resins. Similar in color and texture to natural teeth, the fillings are less noticeable and more attractive than other types of fillings. Your child can smile, talk and eat with confidence. Certain tooth-colored filling materials (such as glass ionomers) even release fluoride, resulting in a tooth that is more resistant to decay. In addition, tooth-colored fillings are compatible with dental sealants. A to...oth can be filled and sealed at the same time to provide extra decay protection. Resin fillings are not for every cavity. They work best in small areas of decay in low-stress areas. A pediatric dentist may not recommend a tooth-colored filling for a large cavity in a back tooth. Resin fillings may cost more than amalgam (silver) fillings because they take longer to place.

Sugar isn’t the only dietary factor that can damage your smile. Foods and beverages that are high in acids eat away at the enamel that protects your teeth, a process known as tooth erosion. Tooth Erosion changes the appearance of your teeth and opens the door for bacteria that can cause cavities or infection. Consult your dentist if you have any oral health concerns.

Every child deserves access to compassion, thorough dentistry in a comforting, private and supportive environment. Our entire team at Rocklin Pediatric Dentistry is skilled in caring for children with special care needs. When caring for children with special needs, our overall approach to dentistry doesn't change. The treatment plan may be slightly different to accommodate any issues the child may be facing at home; e.g., brushing, flossing, dietary concerns and addressing aversions to food textures and tastes, etc. We are always empathetic to the needs of the caregiver and child and show support in any way we can. Visit our website for more information or call us at 916-435-9100.

Sports mouth guards can play an important role in preventing injuries and protecting your smile. Mouth guards are especially important if you participate in organized sports or other recreational activities as they not only protect your teeth, but may also reduce the force of blows that can cause concussions, neck injuries and jaw fractures.

Christopher Columbus is said to have had only one tooth, which is the reason he never showed a smile in portraits. He may have kept the one tooth, after all his others had gone bad due to poor diet and months at sea and little care available to him.
