Today is Armenian Christmas...yes I get 2, always have . Sadly it makes me think back at what’s being going on these past months. Armenia has been dealing with acts of war. Land disputes that date back to the Armenian Genocide of 1915. Like WTF. So many have been killed, young people, families kicked out of their homes and forced to leave, burned down....so much destruction and sadness. And like everything else going on in 2020, we only get to see the tippy tip of the ice burg. Pray for . Tonight we enjoyed a traditional Persian-Armenian dinner to celebrate. One last summit (or summit attempt) before I closed out 2020. It was early, it was cold, it was long, it was more than we (@andymc824 and I) were prepared for. After 3 miles the trail was no longer visible. We were post holing up to our waist, it was windy, cold, and we couldn’t feel our fingers! We hit the eject button. That’s not an easy decision to make, but it was a smart one. Doesn’t matter that the sun came out in full force as we approached the base. How do you eat an elephant? They say one bite at a time. Yet most of us see the entire elephant, have overwhelming feelings, and never start. This is me arriving at base camp (Plaza Argentina) on day 4 of a 14 day expedition. When I first started I was excited, it was day by day for me, but by day 4, all I could think was how am I going to last for 10 more days. I went from taking it day by day (one bite at a time), and enjoying myself to feeling overwhelmed at how I’d ev...er finish. This feeling last for days...3-4, I can’t remember. But what I do remember was my stress, fear, pain, and thoughts of quitting. When I got to camp 1 on day 7, my mindset shifted. It went from how am I going to do this, to, let’s just get through today. By day 8, I was day by day...I didn’t care about anything else. Just get through the day. Take one bite. That’s where it became possible again. It’s funny because once I got to that point, all I could think of was eating a hamburger when I got back. I dreamed about eating a hamburger every minute of my final 6 days....moral of the story, focus on the task at hand by breaking it down into processable pieces...it’s more doable and more fun See more
