I took this photo in either 1997 or 1998... A brush fire was burning from Simi Valley towards Stevenson Ranch. It had died down significantly. As I remember it was a beautiful day with deep blue sky’s. I was shooting freelance photography at the time... covering breaking news. The fire did not appear to be much of a threat. A good buddy of mine Bryan Kneiding, an amazing photographer, from the Santa Clarita Signal and I hiked into Mentryville (Pico Canyon) to shoot som...e photos of a Ventura County hand crew who were firing out one of the canyons. They were using a Very Pistol or Signal Pistol... basically a large bore handgun that shoots flares into the unburned brush to burn the fuel between the road they were on and the fire... to eliminate any threat. The wind changed unpredictedly... and the fire ended up spotting across a road that they were protecting. The whole canyon blew up... becoming engulfed in fire. Chaos ensued... and fortunately for Bryan and I... we were able to jump into one of the Ventura County hand crew rigs enabling us to get out of there. We would have never made it on foot. The fire burned faster than I have ever seen. This picture was shot from what is now Chase Avenue in Stevenson Ranch. L.A. County firefighters protecting homes under construction as the fire burned across the street from where Pico Canyon Elementary School and the park currently sit.

The California Golden Poppies are going off out in Lancaster, CA right now... Thanks to all the rain.

It’s been awhile since I have shot a fire... on the way into work the other morning this went down. A fire in the rear of a one story home in Northridge... some cypress trees and a shed in the backyard. Firefighters prevented this fire from extending into the main house. No injuries. Nice work by the LAFD in busy times.
