Late in January, I said in a sermon that this year will test us. I was thinking of the divisiveness and anxiety we feel in a divided country especially in this charged election and political year. I had not foreseen that the world would be seized by the COVID-19 pandemic or that so much of what we think of as normal life would be challenged. I did not know that there would be panic buying of every day household items, or that we would learn the value of washing our hands and standing six feet apart from people in public places. A message from the Reconciliation Ministries: In October of 1967, members of the Christian Church gathered in St. Louis, Missouri at the annual International Convention of Christian Churches where a group of those members brought up the distress urban areas across the country were experiencing regarding issues of racism and poverty. Participants at the Convention felt strongly that the church should make intentional effort to address these issues happening throughout the chu...rch and nation. So, they got to work. We need to acknowledge the progress, and yet at the same time speak the truth that poverty and racism still have a grip on our country. And so we need to get to work. I live in Walnut Creek and a couple of months ago I went to a City Council meeting where I was going to speak in support of affordable housing. There was such a large crowd I couldn’t get into the Council chambers. The crowd was there to support a local family who had lost a son, brother, nephew, grandson, neighbor and friend to gun violence. The mother had called the police for help because her mentally ill son needed help. This was a close knit community and the neighbors knew the young man was experiencing health issues and they loved him because they had all grown up together. The young man wasn’t himself. The police knew him. And yet unfortunately he was killed by the police. I didn’t know the young man or his family; however, we lived in the same City. And I just couldn’t believe this had happened in my City. I went to the overflow room on the 3rd floor and for 2-3 hours I listened to people share their grief. There weren’t many dry eyes. People were respectful and at the same time wanted answers and action. It’s been 2 months and tomorrow the family is holding a press conference and rally asking why the officers are still on the job.
