Are you wasting your time foam rolling your IT band? . Hurts, doesn’t it? The iliotibial band (IT band/ITB) is a thick tendon that runs from your hip to just be...low your knee. . Every tendon connects a muscle to a bone. Tendons don’t contract a lot, but muscles do. Tendons basically provide strong, springy anchors for muscles. Tendons respond to muscles, if a muscle it tight or weak, the tendon is going to be affected. If a tendon is laid down tight, it’s doing in response to a muscle, not on its own. . At the upper end, the ITB splits into your gluteus maximus and the tensor fascia latae. If you’ve got problems with your ITB, chances are you’ve really got a problem with one of these muscles and not the ITB itself. Do your rolling or whatever release work on those muscles, the tissues that actually have the ability to stretch and contract instead of spending a bunch of time beating up a tendon that’s just along for the ride.
