As a nurse who is experienced I have various feelings about what this woman is saying about Texas Northwestern Hospital. I could defend the nurses and the hospital by explaining away the frustration she feels. My most important and concerning feeling is empathy. As a patient this woman feels that because she is black this happening. I am certain no one called her the N word or referenced her blackness. I am also certain she more likely than not did not see anyone who looked ...like her on her health care team. I also see that she is in pain and feeling unheard. Please listen to your patients and acknowledge their pain. You dont have to do what they ask however explain why not and keep her up dated on what is happening with her care. Explain her blood pressure is being addressed however her pain and stress is a reason it is high. Watch your body language patients are highly sensitive to this when they are vulnerable. Patients want to feel safe and cared for and I have found that simply being honest with them helps. Let her know if you didnt take her pain seriously she would not even be in a bed in the ER she would be in the waiting room. It takes hours to get labs back so she is not expecting them in 20 minutes. Let her know you do the least invasive exams first because the more invasive the higher the risk. Perhaps she had a KUB done and they are waiting on results and if those are of concern they will move to a CT scan. I hope this video makes it to the administration of Texas Northwestern because no patient should feel this way. See more
