Kinesio Tape for Shoulder Impingement Kinesio tape can be a very useful tool in physical therapy practice. Kinesio tape can be used to aid in muscle strength, inhibition of overactive muscle, promotion of stability, unloading of irritable tissue as well as decreasing swelling or joint effusion. Shoulder impingement can lead to shoulder pain. One of the causes of shoulder impingement is when there is too much of a strength difference between the deltoid and rotator cuff muscle...s. When elevating the arm, the stronger deltoid muscle results in a upward pull on the humeral head which results in impingement with the roof of the shoulder. The above image shows an effective kinesio tape job that will assist in inhibition if the deltoid muscle. Inhibition of the the deltoid will allow the rotator cuff muscles to keep the humeral head located in the glenoid fossa (socket) during active shoulder elevation. See more

Balance training Here is a nice progression of balance exercise. This exercise series will both challenge and improve the body’s proprioceptive system. Goal is to maintain balance for 30 seconds to 1 minute. Repeat 3x in both lower extremities. Proprioceptive training is a must in any physical therapy program and is also an excellent exercise for preventing injury and falls. Come see us at RSPT if you have had a recent lower body injury, surgery or just want to work on your balance!

Tendonitis vs Tendonosis Tendon pain is very common, although the stage of injury can vary thus affecting treatment. Acute tendon pain is often termed tendonitis and characterized by inflammation. Chronic tendon pain is termed tendonosis and characterized by low grade inflammation as well as degenerative signs within the tendon. Medical diagnosis is usually made through imaging such as ultrasound or MRI. Observation of tendonosis will typically show a thickening if the tendon... indicating degeneration. Physical therapy treatment for tendonitis will include treatment to unload the affected tissue as well as decrease inflammation. Treatment of tendonosis will lean towards eccentric strengthening of the musculotendinous unit. If you are experiencing tennis elbow, Achilles pain, rotator cuff tendonitis or runners knee you will benefit from physical therapy evaluation to properly stage your injury and prescribe the appropriate treatment to keep you in action!
