On this day, 73 years ago, eventual Rookie of the Year, National League MVP, World Series Champ, NL Batting Champion, two-time stolen base leader, six-time all star and Hall of Famer Jackie Robinson played his first MLB game for the Brooklyn Dodgers. Perhaps some home schooling today can consist of teaching them about who he was and why his place in sports history is so important, and why no MLB player will ever wear number 42 again (except when celebrating the man himself). The biopic 42 is available on rental streaming services for about four bucks and is appropriate for kids age 11 and older (Common Sense Media). It’s a fabulous look at a true superstar. Happy Jackie Robinson Day!
Each parent eventually becomes something of an empty-nester. Whether the kid moves on to college or simply relocates to the attic above the garage, your role in their existence is reduced to tuition subsidizer and periodic laundromat. For the volunteers and fans of River Park Baseball, that moment, while not as abrupt, comes much earlier, when their kids age out, or hang up their spikes altogether. Whether you relished crossing the grass to occupy the 3B coach’s box, plan...ned the end of season pool party, helped manicure the fields, kept score, burned burgers in the shack or simply cheered a little louder when the trains rolled by, when your kid no longer takes his or her position on the field at Ciavarella, the absence of baseball can stir some nostalgia. That void has come for all of us this season. My kids have moved on from RPB, but I was still among the very lucky few to catch some ball this year - a short bike ride down to the park to see a couple innings of a Major game. The sun was out, the players were pumped, and the familiar faces which dotted the stands and dugouts all came alive at the crack of the bat. All the parents and families whose kids are hoping for one more moment out there feel it too. Our kids grow far too fast and before you know it, they are borrowing the car and busting curfew. Let’s take a moment to remember what magic we had/have here, because to forget it would be a horrible crime. So today, where there is no baseball, LET THERE BE BASEBALL!! Share some favorite pictures, or story about your time with the amazing kids of River Park Baseball. And one day, sooner or later, we’ll see you all down at the field again.
The 2020 River Park Baseball Opening Day was wet, but it was fun. The kids threw candy, the families cheered, horns were honking and sirens were blaring. Thank you to everyone who came out and supported the players. The 2020 baseball season is going to be great!
Happy Opening Day! The rain is staying away for now. We cannot wait to see you there!
