This Day In History: October 30, 1938. As part of a series of radio dramas based on famous novels, Orson Welles with the Mercury Players produced H.G. Wells "War of the Worlds." Near panic resulted when listeners believed the simulated news bulletins, which described a Martian invasion of New Jersey, to be real. This Day In History: October 29, 1929. Prices on the New York Stock Exchange plummeted and virtually collapsed four days after President Herbert Hoover had declared, "The fundamental business of the country...is on a sound and prosperous basis." "Black Tuesday," as this day would be called, resulted in more than 16 million shares being dumped and billions of dollars lost. The financial boom was over, and the nation faced nearly a decade of the Great Depression. This Day In History: October 28, 1886. Frederic Auguste Bartholdi's famous sculpture, the statue of "Liberty Enlightening the World," on Bedloe's Island at New York Harbor, was dedicated. A sonnet by Emma Lazarus, inside the pedestal of the statue, contains the words "Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free, the wretched refuse of your teeming shore. Originally named Sadie, Smith is known for her treatment of race, religion and cultural identity and for her novels eccentric characters, savvy humor and snappy dialogue. This Day In History: October 26, 1881. Gunfire erupted at the O.K. Corral in Tombstone, Arizona. At 2:20 p.m., the Earp brothers and gambler/dentist Doc Holiday confronted the Clanton and McLaury brothers at a vacant lot behind the corral. After 30 seconds of shooting, three deaths and decades of romanticizing, the incident would become the most notorious of the Old West. This Day In History: October 25, 1881. Pablo Picasso, called by many the greatest and most influential artist of the 20th century, was born in Malaga, Spain. Picasso excelled as a painter, sculptor and engraver. Some of his most famous paintings include, "The Old Guitarist," "Les Demoiselles" and "Guernica," one of the most recognizable anti-war paintings in history. This Day in History: October 24, 2005. Civil rights activist Rosa Parks died in Detroit, Michigan at the age of 92. On December 1, 1955, Parks rejected a bus drivers order to relinquish her seat in the "colored section" to a white passenger after the whites-only section was filled. Parks was subsequently arrested, found guilty of disorderly conduct and fined $14. This simple act sparked the modern civil right movement leading to a 381-day boycott of the Montgomery bus system, lawsuits and an eventual Supreme Court decision decreeing segregation to be unconstitutional. This Day in History: October 23, 1925. Television talk show host Johnny Carson was born in Corning, Iowa. Carson worked for various radio and TV shows, including, "Who Do You Trust?" He first appeared on "The Tonight Show" in 1958 and was named the permanent host in 1962 with the resignation of Jack Paar. He remained on the air for more than 30 years, basically inventing the TV talk show format as we know it today. When he retired in 1992, he was regarded as a national institution. This Day in History: October 22, 1962. In a dramatic 18-minute televised speech, President Kennedy shocked Americans by revealing "unmistakable evidence" of missile launchers on the island of Cuba that were capable of reaching the United States. The president announced that the United States would prevent ships carrying weapons to reach Cuba, while demanding that the Soviets withdraw their missiles. On October 28 the USSR announced it removed the weapons in question. In return, the US removed missiles from Turkey that were aimed at the USSR. This Day in History: October 21, 1956. Actress and writer Carrie Fisher was born in Burbank, California. She found overnight stardom as the intrepid and wisecracking Princess Leia in the 1977 film "Star Wars." As she built an admired body of work with films like "When Harry Met Sally" and "Hannah and Her Sisters," she also battled bipolar disorder, substance abuse and a sometimes rocky relationship with mother Debbie Reynolds, all inspirations for later works: her semiautobiographical novel "Postcards from the Edge," and the memoirs "Wishful Thinking" and "Shockaholic".
