Rigoberto Ruelas Memorial Scholarship 13.01.2021

Our next UTLA Rigoberto Ruelas Scholarship $1000 award goes to Elizabeth Caballero from Reseda High School. Elizabeth was also the perfect candidate to receive our award, she has managed to keep a 4.0 GPA and still have time to volunteer at a local hospital. Here is what Virginia Rivero Napoles (Director Volunteer Services) and Joe Morgan (AP Calculus teacher) had to say about Elizabeth. "Elizabeth is a very confident, intelligent and a very hard working student! As a hosp...ital volunteer, Elizabeth was exposed and observed physicians and nurses evaluating patients which influenced and energized Elizabeth to pursue the nursing field to aid patients. Elizabeth displays passion, determination and concerned skills much needed in the nursing profession. She articulated very well with the nursing staff and patients." "Elizabeth is the type of student that doesn't have to be asked to do her work, because she is always ready with a paper and a pencil on her desk. She is always present and on time to class. I know that Elizabeth is completely prepared to be successful in her future because she possesses qualities that will allow her to achieve in life." Congratulations Elizabeth!!:)

Our next UTLA Rigoberto Ruelas Scholarship $1000 award goes to Xiangyang "Peter" Liu from New Open World Academy High School. Peter is driven, committed, and highly motivated student, regardless of the changes in his life has never given up. Here is what his counselor John U. Aquino and his teacher Mrs. Bagorio had to say about Peter. "Peter has truly been a gift to our fledgling school. He is unlike any other student I have ever met and among the very best I have encountere...d In over 10 years of service as a counselor. While we have offered him many opportunities, Peter in return has offered us academia, service and community." "Even as Peter immersed himself in excelling in his high school and college courses, he was never too busy to lend a helping hand. Last year. I had a student who spoke Mandarin and Korean and very little English. I had asked Peter to help me in communicating with this student every now and then. I found out later that not onl_\ did Peter help with translations but he was also advising the student about strategies to help with his acquisition of English" (Special Thank you goes to Antonio Alvarenga for presenting the UTLA Rigoberto Ruelas Scholarship to Peter.)
