Here is one of my uni-cycles in action!
Hiwheel riders are an intrepid group!
For those that met the man, this is Abram some years back.
This happened at some point recently in the UK. Be careful of traffic crossing your lane. https://www.ladbible.com//uk-man-riding-penny-farthing-in-
I am really not open today... Or tomorrow but being that I was by the phone when it rang I picked up and the customer asked me... " How do I put the kickstand on the Mini Hiwheel?" To which I answered..."Uh... They don't come with kickstands." He told me I was mistaken as there was one in both the boxes he got. Seems there is a toy surprise in some Mini boxes that I didn't know about... He said he may see if he can get it to work. To my great regret and sorrow, I received ne...ws this week that the man that had worked here with me the last 20 plus years, Abram, to those that have come in and met him or spoken to him on the phone, has left this mortal coil. He was a wonderful person and a loyal friend and I miss him greatly. He spent most of 2020 either in the hospital or at home, being that he was too infirm to come into work. From time to time I would drop wheels off at his home for him so he could keep himself busy in between trips to the ER when he would call for help. I sent him back to be with his family in Belize back in October, last I heard when we spoke he was loving being with his family, eating chickens from the yard and fish from the river in back of his house. He was putting weight back on and eating regularly again and told me he was happy. He has been and will continue to be missed. Fair winds and following seas. Keep the rubber side down and the wheels spinning. As to the business in general, the final quarter of 2020 proved to be the best quarter of the worst year in company history. So that's a good thing I guess since things are looking up ish.... I sent out almost 30 full size bikes, both custom and regular but not counting Mini's and the couple that got picked up here. Sold a whole bunch of Worksman Tricycles and my leather seats and parts but I am still out of Roadster bikes and moustache handle bars, with the bars being a ticklish issue and no end in sight. But all things being equal, the doors are still being opened Monday through Friday mostly regularly, 9-6 ish for the most part and will continue to go in a productive fashion. Well, Happy New Year one and all!
We used to sell a lot of these reproduction balloon tire bikes. Roadmaster, Columbia, Western Flyer... Yah, that was a good time...
My latest custom trike is on it's way to Europe for events and parties. Featuring a rotating overhead wine glass carrier, front mounted beverage buckets and a removable rear table for snacks or not as required. 48" in black with white tires.
Read it and understand... And support a local small business at the same time.
Here's one for you.
The brand our Superior is based from...
Some friends of mine! Worked on Amy's bike recently.
Here's what you can do with a hiwheel from me if you really wanted...
Happy Halloween!
Something from the not so distant past. I know some of these pioneers. Maybe they took a different route that me but we all got our mountain bikes in the end.
Another way to do it...
One way to do it! What's yours?
Here's what one customer made in their garage. Atta boy Jon Nowak. Inspiration for all.
Worksman Low Gravity Cargo Bike. New. Additional upgrades include pannier baskets on the back and blinky LED pedals. this wound up at the shop by mistake and as a result is heavily discounted to help it go out of the shop. The total is $700 plus sales tax. This is normally about $983 with shipping and he extra basket and pedals. Rideable Bicycle Replicas Alameda. Call us at 510-769-0980. By appointment and wear a mask.
Here are a collection of shots that should be up on the website shortly. Thanks for everyone that sent them in for me. Hope they help make you famous...
One of my peeps. Way to go Jeff. Teachers rule. Being that my little is doing remote schooling now, this strikes a cord. Helping your students get to know the person and changing lives. I had a couple like that. Ron Arturi comes to mind as do Brett Tovani and Mrs Cassidy. Props to ALL the teachers out there, the ones that get things done and look to our future. I can't say enough about you.
don't know who Savannah Burrows is and don't care except she has good taste in bikes.
Penny Polo in the UK... Cool. https://richmond.nub.news/n/watch-richmond-man-victorious-i
This is how I make a hiwheel rack for a receiver hitch. Using a piece of angle iron I weld that to the hitch with a truss rod under it for rigidity. Then I make a removable upright that bolts to the hitch so that it can be taken apart for storage. Who wants to store a rack as big as the bike anyway? 3 nuts welded to the hitch and 3 flanges welded to the upright make bolting the 2 pieces together easy. Thanks to Amy Oleynik for bringing her bike in for repairs.
Good job Patrick!
Sending this 52" Superior out to the customer. Bright!
I'm guessing this had to be about 1977 according to the person that sent it. That's me on the 38 in the intersection of Park and Santa Clara with Big Warren at the right on the Arrow and I can't see who's behind me. We've been in Alameda a long time.
When you want a hiwheel AND a boat make one of these. Neat.
One of mine being used as a demo bike at an historic location and museum... Perfect.
Well, business is bad and getting worse. And this just in... Notice: Lapse in Appropriations SBA is unable to accept new applications at this time for the Economic Injury Disaster Loan (EIDL)-COVID-19 related assistance program (including EIDL Advances) based on available appropriations funding.... Applicants who have already submitted their applications will continue to be processed on a first-come, first-served basis. So, for the first time ever that it's needed it's not available to us.

As usual. I'm the last one to see my stuff in action... but there they are. The latest display piece I've done. Kinda cool...
Here's the latest big thing out of the shop. Custom differential driven Double Eagle trike for a circus to tow a popcorn cart. Neat...
so, for you locals, this may be a cool thing to go check out.
From some UK fans. Thanks Paul Knight.
Got this ready for the Google project today. It'll be installed on the campus so I am told. Kinda cool.
Whoot! A world championship race! How cool! And the guy in the middle ground in the Malten jersey is Alexandre Voisine on one of our bikes... https://www.usacycling.org//usa-cycling-announces-plans-fo
Been a while since I posted anything but here's something new. A bike I just got finished. (thanks for the patience Philip, it was a tough 12 months for me here.) This is a custom 54" Superior. Based on the American Champion line by Gormully and Jeffery of Chicago, Illinois. This bike hass a 54" front wheel and custom 20" rear wheel with the G&J color burgundy. Adjustable step and pedals. Customer ordered radial lace. Wooden Pear style grips. Red rubber and light brown leather stuff. Nickle highlights and a hub lamp. Seems some of my best stuff can still come out of some of the hardest times.
A friend did this video a while back and sent it to me...
share this out... Find the stolen stuff
For you determined home builders... Have at it.
One of the more interesting home builds I hand a small hand in of late...
Hey Hiwheel rider friends. I am remiss, I meant to put out a notice a couple weeks ago about the 4th of July parade here in Alameda. I expect that a group of us will crash it again and ride the route. If you are interested in coming, let me know and plan on being here at the shop by 10. Usually we join up at the tail end and slowly ride our way to the front passing the entire parade route so that we can see all the entries ourselves as we amaze the crowd with our riding and bikes. I do have a couple loaner bikes too potentially.
So, people ask me about how they should lock their bikes all the time and I tell them, use multiple, quality U locks and even then they can expect that someone somewhere may still steal their bike. They say how is that possible and I tell them, an angle grinder with a cut off wheel will have me away in no time if I so chose. Here is a good video showing what I mean.
Here are a set of wheels I made or this guy in Las Vegas
Is it Spring yet? I'm guessing not because no one has been getting on my bikes lately...
Need to sell some Mini's. Anyone? I'll give 10% off for those that call and mention this post! 510-769-0980
We should have these bikes back in stock shortly! Stand By!
How to Ride a Hiwheel Bicycle, watch this video for a short tutorial on how to ride.
Here's my new How to Ride Video! Have a look... https://youtu.be/ltRINzFcuoA
F-ing Tariffs. My spoke wire cost has gone up. Here is the reply on the new wire costs from my supplier. And mind you, this is for domestically produced stainless material. I made one price increase this year already due to the rise in mild steel costs, guess I'll need to up it again. Sorry folks. But you can thank president dump. From my local supplier. "I just did a calculation; if you get the same order, you will need 895 lbs of material - I ran through the numbers 3x to verify. In addition, since your last order 2016, due to Section 232 tariffs, wire pricing has skyrocked as much as 30 - 40%."
So I have been approached by the Southern CA. Wheelmen Captain about helping organize an entry for the Rose Parade. Interested riders should send me a message. This would be in Pasadena, CA on January 1st 2019.
Doing a mini Maker Fair in Alameda the 8th should anyone want to come visit!
I've held off on price increases now for 4 years. Sorry to have to say now that I've had to increase the price of the bikes and parts. As an example, due to the new price of ductile steel and iron, the cost of my cast fork crown has risen $6 each. My tubing costs has gone up 75%. 1 1/2" tube is now $38 a length. Nearly $2 a foot. Yah, not pleased and I'm sure you aren't either. Meanwhile, thanks for the patronage. Greg
Loretta McGrath Francis
Glad for a spring rush. Keep it coming folks! Also there is a special on the Mini. $20 off! $169 plus S&H.
This is a nice article. I've seen many of the images before and am happy to share them here for your education. Cycling has long been popular in the SF / Oakland region and here's some supporting evidence.
Here's a clip from a show done back in 1989 that I built a bike for. Josh Brolin rides it and says, "That ain't so hard". https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kc4foa5xG9g&feature=youtu.be

How it's done in New York. Thanks Randy Kato for the image.
Adam Andrade 56" Copper plated Excelsior. I should talk to you about the new seat springs I have. May be more comfy...
On of my riders!
Bernie Marinovich doing it right
Ok, since my 3 week prior short notice New Years ride didn't go off so well, I'm putting this out here now. Northern CA Wheelmen, take note! New ride planned for St. Patricks Day. Sunday the 18th of March. The plan is to ride The Great Highway and Golden Gate Park. As some of you know, the park is closed to vehicular traffic in Sundays so it makes for a great riding space and the Great Highway gives a wonderful view of the Pacific. I expect this will be an OHWT length ride at least. We'll park at the beach, and make a jaunt down the highway and then back to pedal the park, ending up again at the parking along Ocean Beach and the Beach Chalet. 1000 Great Hwy, San Francisco, CA 94121. Hiwheel bikes are the plan and should someone not have a bike and want to attend, let me know, I may have something you can borrow.
Some guys that used my wheels to make their bike. It's an unusual bike. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=joDwo4468vU
Here's a good start to the new year. Have a gander at this. http://www.ozarksalive.com/bicycle-museum-shows-off-rare-f/
One of a few article about us over the years. Cool.
