I don't know about you, but we need a distraction. Something silly, light, fun and not at all serious. Our next Rialto Recommends DOWN WITH LOVE starring Renee Zellweger and Ewan McGregor is just the ticket. Released in 2003, DOWN WITH LOVE takes place in 1962 in New York City when love blossoms between a playboy journalist and a feminist advice author. Entertainment Weekly called DOWN WITH LOVE "A succulent piece of postmodern fluff." Sounds like just what the doctor or...dered. While the Philadelphia Inquirer said "It's pure pleasure to watch Zellweger and McGregor bound across a set with the swinger confidence of Frank Sinatra taking the stage of the Sands Hotel." Pour yourself a cocktail and enjoy DOWN WITH LOVE available for a modest rental fee from Apple, Amazon, GooglePlay, YouTube, Vudu and DirectTV. Cheers! https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0309530/?ref_=nv_sr_srsg_0 See more

While the votes are being counted and the pundits pundit why not take enjoy a heartwarming story of friendship. Our next Rialto Recommends is Peter Chelsom's 1998 film THE MIGHTY. The film tells the story of a strong friendship between a young boy with Morquio's syndrome and an older boy who is always bullied because of his size. Adapted from the novel, Freak the Mighty, the film explores a building of trust and friendship. Kevin, an intelligent guy helps out Maxwell to imp...rove his reading skills. In return, Kevin wants Maxwell to take him out places since he is not allowed out unauthorized. Being the social outcasts of the town, Kevin and Maxwell come to realize that they are similar to each other and accept that they are "freaks" and nothing will stop them. Spirited and sweet with an emphasis on the healing power of friendship, THE MIGHTY is a modest charmer that comes by its whimsy honestly. Roger Ebert said "What I liked most about the movie is the way it shows that imagination can be a weapon in life." The Austin Chronicle said "Sentimental and quixotic, THE MIGHTY is good family fare; it's especially tuned in to the narrative needs of those suffering (in the past or the present) those distinctively adolescent agonies of feeling like a social misfit. THE MIGHTY is streaming on CBS All Access or available to rent for a modest fee from Amazon, Vudu and others. Check out THE MIGHTY and share it with the younger people in your life. https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0119670/?ref_=nv_sr_srsg_6 See more

We return to the sometimes wacky world of the Coen Brothers for our next Rialto Recommends. RAISING ARIZONA was their second feature and first to be released a major studio - 20th Century Fox. When a childless couple of an ex-con and an ex-cop decide to help themselves to one of another family's quintuplets, their lives become more complicated than they anticipated. A terrifically original, eccentric screwball comedy, Raising Arizona may not be the Coens' most disciplined ...movie, but it's one of their most purely entertaining. Starring Holly Hunter, Nicholas Cage and John Goodman, RAISING ARIZONA is streaming Cinemax, MaxGo, and DirectTV or is available to rent for a modest fee from Amazon, GooglePlay, YouTube, Vudu, DirectTV and others. Check out RAISING ARIZONA and have some laughs with the Coen Brothers and a great cast! https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0093822/?ref_=nv_sr_srsg_0 See more

We finish up our thrills and chills Rialto Recommends suggestions with Ridley Scott's 1979 sci-fi/horror classic ALIEN. In deep space, the crew of the commercial starship Nostromo is awakened from their cryo-sleep capsules halfway through their journey home to investigate a distress call from an alien vessel. The terror begins when the crew encounters a nest of eggs inside the alien ship. An organism from inside an egg leaps out and attaches itself to one of the crew, causin...g him to fall into a coma. A modern classic, Alien blends science fiction, horror and bleak poetry into a seamless whole. Salon said "A haunted-house movie set in space, Alien also has a profoundly existentialist undertow that makes it feel like a film noir -- the other genre to feature a slithery, sexualized monster as its classic villain." While Entertainment Weekly said "In space, the famous tagline went, no one can hear you scream. In Alien, you can hear lessons for the sci-fi future in a great milestone from the recent past." ALIEN is streaming on HBO, HBOMax, and DirectTV or is available to rent for a modest fee from Apple, Amazon, GooglePlay, YouTube, Vudu and others. Whether you have never seen ALIEN and are watching it for the first time or you are watching it again, share your thoughts on this modern classic with us in the comments. https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0078748/?ref_=nv_sr_srsg_0 See more

In honor of the passing of Sir Sean Connery we are choosing his 1990 film THE HUNT FOR RED OCTOBER as our next Rialto Recommends. Based on the popular Tom Clancy novel, this suspenseful movie tracks Soviet submarine captain Marko Ramius (Sean Connery) as he abandons his orders and heads for the east coast of the United States. Equipped with innovative stealth technology, Ramius' submarine, "Red October," is virtually invisible. However, when an American sub briefly detects t...he Russians' presence, CIA agent Jack Ryan (Alec Baldwin) sets out to determine Ramius' motives, fearing he may launch an attack on the U.S. Perfectly cast and packed with suspense, THE HUNT FOR RED OCTOBER is an old-fashioned submarine thriller with plenty of firepower to spare. The LA Times said "You may not be limp from accumulated tension when this hunt is over, but its cautiously upbeat global message leaves a satisfying glow and it operates with a crackerjack premise." While Variety said "THE HUNT FOR RED OCTOBER is a terrific adventure yarn." THE HUNT FOR RED OCTOBER is streaming on Showtime and Sling or is available to rent for a modest fee from GooglePlay, YouTube, Vudu, Apple, Amazon and others. Check out THE HUNT FOR RED OCTOBER and share your favorite Sean Connery movies with us in the comments. https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0099810/?ref_=nv_sr_srsg_0 See more

We continue with thrills and chills for our next Rialto Recommends with Alfred Hitchcock's iconic 1963 film THE BIRDS. Chic socialite Melanie Daniels enjoys a passing flirtation with an eligible attorney in a San Francisco pet shop and, on an impulse, follows him to his hometown bearing a gift of lovebirds. But upon her arrival, the bird population runs amok. Suddenly, the townsfolk face a massive avian onslaught, with the feathered fiends inexplicably attacking people all o...ver Bodega Bay. Proving once again that build-up is the key to suspense, Alfred Hitchcock successfully turned birds into some of the most terrifying villains in horror history. The New York Times said "Mr. Hitchcock and his associates have constructed a horror film that should raise the hackles of the most courageous and put goose-pimples on the toughest hide." While more recently the Chicago Reader said "Alfred Hitchcock's most abstract film (1963), and perhaps his subtlest, still yielding new meanings and inflections after a dozen or more viewings." THE BIRDS is streaming on Fubo and Peacock Premium or is available to rent for a modest fee from Apple, Amazon, GooglePlay, YouTube, Vudu and others. Check out THE BIRDS if you've never seen it or watch it again and share your thoughts with us in the comments. https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0056869/?ref_=nv_sr_srsg_0 See more

We continue with thrills and chills in our Rialto Recommends this week with Clint Eastwood's directorial debut PLAY MISTY FOR ME from 1971. Long, long before Fatal Attraction, PLAY MISTY FOR ME set audiences on edge. A brief fling between a male disc jockey and an obsessed female fan takes a frightening, and perhaps even deadly turn when another woman enters the picture. Roger Ebert said "PLAY MISTY FOR ME is not the artistic equal of Psycho (1960), but in the business of ...collecting an audience into the palm of its hand and then squeezing hard, it is supreme. It doesn't depend on a lot of surprises to maintain the suspense. There ARE some surprises, sure, but mostly the film's terror comes from the fact that the strange woman is capable of anything." While Time Magazine said "On an informal Richter scale of movie terror, PLAY MISTY FOR ME registers a few gasps, some frissons and at least one spleen-shaking shudder. A good little scare show, in other words, despite various gaps in logic and probability." PLAY MISTY FOR ME is streaming on Peacock or available to rent for a modest fee from Apple, Amazon, GooglePlay, YouTube, Vudu, DirectTV and others. Check out PLAY MISTY FOR ME and share your thoughts with us in the comments. https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0067588/?ref_=nv_sr_srsg_0 See more

It is the season for the chills and thrills so our next Rialto Recommends is 1967's WAIT UNTIL DARK starring Audrey Hepburn, Alan Arkin and Richard Crenna. After a flight back home, Sam Hendrix returns with a doll he innocently acquired along the way. As it turns out, the doll is actually stuffed with heroin, and a group of criminals led by the ruthless Roat has followed Hendrix back to his place to retrieve it. When Hendrix leaves for business, the crooks make their move --... and find his blind wife, Susy, alone in the apartment. Soon, a life-threatening game begins between Susy and the thugs. Variety said "WAIT UNTIL DARK emerges as an excellent suspense drama, effective in casting, scripting, direction and genuine emotional impact." While the New York Times said "Once this build-up is accomplishedonce the sinister plot is launched and the young woman suddenly realizes that she has been duped and is in grave perilthe shock and suspense of the situation hit the audience with almost the same force, I'd imagine, as they evidently hit her. And from here on, the tension is terrific and the melodramatic action is wild as the blind woman uses all her courage and ingenuity to foil her assailants and save her life." WAIT UNTIL DARK is available to rent for a modest fee from GooglePlay, YouTube, Amazon, Apple, Vudu and DirectTV. Today's Rialto Recommends is a the landmark documentary THE CASE AGAINST 8. A behind-the-scenes look inside the case to overturn California's ban on same-sex marriage. Shot over five years, the film follows the unlikely team that took the first federal marriage equality lawsuit to the U.S. Supreme Court. The San Francisco Chronicle said "Even knowing the outcome, watching 8... is like watching a well-scripted legal thriller." While the New York Times said "THE CASE AGAINST... 8 functions as a valuable record of the nuts-and-bolts conference room side of advocacy - an aspect of civil rights work not often seen on screen." THE CASE AGAINST 8 is streaming on HBOMax, HBO, and DirectTV or is available to rent for a modest fee from Amazon, GooglePlay, YouTube and Vudu. Several months ago we recommended Rose Troche's directorial debut Go Fish. Our next Rialto Recommends is her second feature the British comedy BEDROOMS & HALLWAYS. A light, soap-operatic satire of shifting sexual orientation from Rose Troche, the director of "Go Fish," this Brit import was a buzz flick at Gay and Lesbian film festivals all through 1998 for its steady supply of laughs, its exploration of sexual identity and its somewhat surprising last act. The San Francisco... Chronicle said "This roundelay of upwardly mobile, hip, 30ish Londoners almost represents a Kinsey curve, with the exclusively gay and straight at either end and a lot of gray area in between, enough to make it interesting and to make more than a few people uncomfortable. Making people a little uncomfortable is not a bad thing for comedy, and just when things start to look too formulaic, BEDROOMS & HALLWAYS turns out the way a good comedy should, with all the main characters coupling up -- but in ways that cannot be foreseen." While the Austin Chronicle said "A witty script and bright performances lend vibrancy to the movie as it explores the possibilities and permutations of sexuality and intimacy. It never delves too deeply into the ramifications of all this, but its breeziness may also be part of its charm" BEDROOMS & HALLWAYS is streaming on Amazon, Hoopla, DirectTV, EPix and Dekkoo. Check out this comedy and share your thoughts with us in the comments. https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0126810/?ref_=nv_sr_srsg_0 See more

Following 2013's Lone Survivor director Peter Berg and Mark Wahlberg reunited in 2016 along with John Malkovich and Kurt Russell for DEEPWATER HORIZON which is our next Rialto Recommends. On April 20, 2010, the Deepwater Horizon drilling rig explodes in the Gulf of Mexico, igniting a massive fireball that kills several crew members. Chief electronics technician Mike Williams (Mark Wahlberg) and his colleagues find themselves fighting for survival as the heat and the flames... become stifling and overwhelming. Banding together, the co-workers must use their wits to make it out alive amid all the chaos. The Los Angeles Times said "Both a sobering memorial to the fallen and a harrowing chronicle of survival, anchored by Mark Wahlberg's performance as a blue-collar hero thrust into the jaws of a horrifying man-made catastrophe." While the London Evening Standard said "Few disaster movies point the finger at a corporation as directly as this. Reel in horror. Then blame BP." DEEPWATER HORIZON is available to rent for a modest fee from Redbox, Apple, Amazon, GooglePlay, YouTube, Vudu and others. Check out DEEPWATER HORIZON. This surprisingly emotional film is an action flick for smart people. https://www.imdb.com/title/tt1860357/?ref_=fn_al_tt_1 See more
