This puts virtual teaching in a whole new light! Mr. Rogers, the pioneer of virtual teaching! I spent almost every day with him, for years, and I learned more from him than any other teacher I’ve ever had.

Handwriting Classes at Reading For Life RFL handwriting classes are online this school year, but we’ve figured out how to make classes effective and engaging, e...ven for 5 and 6 year-olds. All classes have a maximum of 6 students so that each student can get all the attention they need to succeed. First of all, the teacher uses a document camera as well as her face camera, showing the students everything she’d be showing to a student in person. Likewise, every handwriting student will be provided with a document camera, so that the teacher can see and give guidance to students as they’re writing. We’re creating a kit of materials for each student, full of things that make instruction interesting, fun, and creative for young learners. These are high-quality materials from the RFL learning center, and will need to be returned. We’re asking for a deposit on these items, as well as for loan of the document camera. There are however lots of materials provided that your child can keep. They’ll each receive a personalized binder full of resources, like double lined paper, code charts, handwriting guides, and writing materials. They’ll learn to take pride in this binder, as they add to it everything they’re doing in the class and practicing at home. Handwriting instruction is grounded in the Handwriting Without Tears method. It’s a highly effective method which was developed by an occupational therapist. It starts with the simplest letters - the capitals, then builds skills sequentially as students progress to learning to write the lowercase letters. Cursive writing builds on the mastery of lowercase letter writing. All HWT materials are high quality, beautiful and engaging to the imagination. The printing classes offered this year are ideal for kindergartners, who will be learning all the sound-symbol correspondences of the alphabet as they learn to write them. Ms. Arlene is teaching inline with the Linguistic Phonics principle that using letter names is detrimental at the K level. As children work they gain the reflexive association to the thing that makes decoding (reading) possible: the speech sound connected to each letter. PRINTING THE CAPITALS Class meets Monday - Thursday 3:00-3:40, September 1 - December 17, 2020 Children learn to correctly form all the capital letters in the alphabet, as well as the numbers. Classes will be short - 40 minutes four times per week. This is plenty of time for a kindergarten age child to be learning on the screen. During these sessions, Ms. Arlene will give formal handwriting instruction as well as mix in some hand warm-up exercises, some drawing, some crafting, some meaningful writing, and maybe a little singing. This class will establish for your kindergarten child a solid foundation for good daily study habits with included homework. Printing the Capitals takes your child through half the school year. PRINTING THE LOWERCASE LETTERS January - May 2021, schedule to be announced. Picks up where Printing the Capitals left off and takes the child through to the end of the school year. Children learn to correctly form all lowercase letters, the speech sounds associated with them, and their correspondence to the capitals. Like the Capitals class, instruction will include creative and multi-sensory activities, making learning to write the more complex lowercase letters memorable, effective, and fun. PRINT TO CURSIVE Class meets Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday 1:00-2:00, September 1 - December 17, 2020 Cursive classes are for children age 7+. Print to Cursive is ideal if your child still needs to learn to print all the letters correctly. This is essential for learning cursive writing. Ms. Arlene reviews all the lowercase letter formations then builds on that skill, showing them proper cursive formation. Print to Cursive takes your child to the middle of the school year. BEGINNING CURSIVE Class will meet January - May, with the schedule to be announced. This class will pick up where the last one left off. Students will work on the letters with complex strokes, both similar and different to print. They will learn capital letters at the end as they are less frequently used and have more complex formation. Students will continue practicing baseline letter connections and trickier letter connections. By the end of the school year, students will produce all cursive characters correctly and write any message in cursive with confidence. You can learn more about Reading For Life and its literacy classes on the RFL website: https://www.readingforlife.school/programs If you’re interested in any of these handwriting classes, please fill out this interest form: https://form.jotform.com/202228888596067. We’ll soon be in touch to set up an online orientation and assessment with your child. In this short session student and teacher will begin to get to know one another, and the child gets to check out some of the lessons and activities they’ll be doing in class. We look forward to meeting you and working with your child this school year!
