Filipino Surfers of Kellys Cove. There were a number of filipino surfers when I started surfing at Kellys Cove, most in my generation. Not much Chinese, Japanese, or other Asian surfers. Filipinos were natural surfers. My generation were given nicknames, most were invented by Daryl Scobie, the nicknames stuck and we could never change it. 1. Tony Roansch Half Filipino, Half German-Filipino. Father and Mother lived in the Philipines, Tony grew up in SF. He was a few year...s older than me, we all looked up to him as we learned to surf at Kellys Cove. 2. Glenn Ishmael- Full Filipino- Died of a mixture of downers and liquor in the early 70’s. He was one of the best young surfers at Kellys Cove. I made a video tribute to him at one of our Kellys Cove Reunions, which is in this youtube link- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_56qW405QvQ 2a- GlennSavage Coconut, Moose Harry Pali (Hawaiian/Filipino), Roger Miller Minister of Psychodelics, Quasar (dog), Larry Giles (Filipino/African). 3. Dave Papke- Hawaiian/Filipino. Died of asbestos poisoning from removing it in old homes. 4. Daryl Scobie Big D, Filipino/Caucasian. He and I grew up together, went to High School together, same age. 4a. He was a great surfer, rode Mavericks when he was younger. 5. The Giles Brothers Wayne (G), Albert King (Minister of Music), Larry Giles. Wayne and King surfed, Larry played the congos at the beach while we surfed. They played for the Kellys Cove gang at various venues, spent about 4 years in Honolulu playing in nightclubs. Wayne and King both passed a few years ago. 6. Joe Bravo- Filipino, Danny Zacharias-Filipino, both younger surfers starting out when we became their mentors. 7. Eagles Beach (Next to China Beach). We would go down there after High School and go body surfing or surfing if there were waves. Girls started to come down to join us. 8. 1969- Kellys Cove- We had just returned from our first trip to Kauai, tanned and experienced in riding Hawaiian waves. Left to Right- King Giles, Me Da Fly, Ricky Valera, two others unknown, Danny Scobie (Filipino/Caucasian), Glenn Ishmael. 9. 1970- Examiner news photo

Many young surfers lack the resources to do what they love: COMPETITIONS! Here is a video about Heljune Brownie Lozada who we have helped reach 2 competitions in the past. Our aim is to bring equity to surfing as a sport and give those a chance to travel who otherwise wouldn't be able to do so.

Here’s what’s found regularly in Dahican Beach, Mati, Mindanao, Philippines. Surfer communities have been the new coastal guardians for at least 10 years now. Increased tourism has been leading to more trash left behind. This is a beach where sea turtles come to lay their eggs

The youth are taking action in Siargao against businesses that do not support the local infrastructure: producing excessive waste, loud partying in family neighborhood zones. Locals taking action to protect their lands

If you ever find yourself surfing in Rockaway Beach, New York- definitely contact Lou Harris who runs the Black Surfing Association. Give him a warm hello and go for a surf. He is doing great things for the kids out there at Rockaway Beach and beyond. He holds regular free surfing and skateboarding lessons for the youth of the community and anyone else who would like to join in. Everyone of every color is invited to come join in and learn how to surf and skate and be part of ...their community. He has joined up with VANS to help everyone in distressed situations to have warm shoes, and he also helps the community with warm clothing drives. I love that he takes the children on field trips not just to the city, but all over the Rockaway community to see the behind the scenes of restaurants and shops and everything really so they can learn more about their community and help drive goals for future endeavors.
