Resolute Sailing

Sue, wife of Captain Mike and an extraordinary sailor in her own right, sent me this wonderful photo of Resolute, heading out from San Pedro to Catalina with Mi...ke and their daughter Pip on board. Sue wrote, "What struck me as I watched from the dock was that Pip was helping to steer, then she was raising the sails - a good deal on her own, then she was coiling down. It's really the first year that she's started doing these things. With that much wind in the channel, I knew they were going to have a driving hard sail over. I wasn't worried in the least. This will be Black Dolphin and your students before you know it." Much needed encouraging words from Sue for us. Our boat, Black Dolphin, is a sistership to Resolute that was build in 1944. My wife Jadis and I live and work in Hong Kong and brought her over to use as an "outdoor classroom" for The Harbour School, our small international school. Black Dolphin has been undergoing a refit and is scheduled to be refloated next Thursday once the hull work is completed. Then it is on to the deck, mast and rigging work, as well as finishing up the electrical. Current thinking is that she will be ready for sea trials at the end of October. We cannot wait.
