Prolactin is a hormone that stimulates milk production in women. Too much prolactin (hyperprolactinemia) can disrupt ovulation and lead to irregular menstrual cycles, making it more difficult to conceive. IUI, or intrauterine insemination, is used to treat many types of infertility. IUI, often combined with oral ovulation inducing medications such as Clomid or Letrozole, is often the first treatment recommended before moving on to more invasive options, such as in-vitro fertilization (IVF). IUI can help overcome issues with low sperm count, cervical factor infertility and unexplained infertility. IUI is also used to help women achieve pregnancy with donor sperm. With IUI, sperm are washed and concentrated, and then placed directly into the uterus, putting them closer to the egg. Low-dose, minimal stimulation (Mini), and mild stimulation IVF are IVF cycles that use oral medications (eg. Clomid) alone or together with lower doses of injectable medications (gonadotropins) than are used in conventional IVF.
