¡Qué bonito es volver a las reuniones en persona! Ayer se realizó una reunión entre inquilinos e inquilinas inconformes con algunas de las decisiones de loa nuevos dueños del parque de casas móviles donde viven. Se informaron de quienes son estos nuevos dueños, el nombre de su negocio, y el lugar de su oficina.... Se informaron de sus derechos bajos la Ley de Residencia en Casas Móviles. Y quedaron en invitar a los nuevos dueños a una reunión para conocerlos y hablar de las diferentes situaciones que enfrentan, y para aprender directamente de parte de ellos qué planes tienen para la propiedad, por bien o por mal.

Our brother René from Housing is a Human Right did an excellent job defending Prop 21 against the attacks from the landlords in his debate Debra Carlton from the California Apartment Association (AKA the landlord lobby). What's Prop 21? Prop 21 will REFORM the 1995 Costa Hawkins Rental Housing Act, which banned local jurisdictions from protecting rental housing built after 1995 from unfair rental increases. IF PASSED by the voters in November, cities and counties will be able to control residential rents on apartment buildings 15 years or older. It will allow cities to have more local control over housing in their jurisdictions, which is crucial as COVID-19 has exacerbated the California housing crisis. YES on 21!!

On April 6, the California Judicial Council issued Emergency Rule 1, which prohibited courts in California from issuing summons for eviction cases (Unlawful Detainers) for the entire duration of the COVID-19 pandemic and for 90 days after the state of emergency. This order, in effect, is the only emergency eviction moratorium in the state, reducing the number of evictions in LA County from an average of 3,381 per month in 2019 to an average of 350 per month since Rule 1. This rule effectively halted the first tsunami wave of evictions during the COVID-19 pandemic. Why did the Judicial Council decide to rescind Rule 1? The Judicial Council is the rule-making body for the California courts, including the LA Superior Courts. In June, the Council nearly repealed Rule 1, but thanks to the collective efforts of tenants unions and allies, we were able to pressure the Council to postpone. Recently, the Council announced their decision to repeal Rule 1 on September 1st. What will happen on September 1st? We will see an eviction tsunami wave, potentially displacing over 491,000 families in LA County alone. This will increase homelessness, gentrification, and amid the current pandemic, the likelihood of a new wave of COVID cases. This is more than a housing crisis -- this puts public health at grave risk. We cannot stay safer at home when we are forced out of our homes. Evictions are a threat to public health!
