Welcome to our second episode of ACS Connect where we connect the dots in health equity at the American Cancer Society. In this episode host/producer Cyndie Dav...ila shares space with ACS volunteer board member Cynthia Begay, a Doctorate student of Preventive Medicine and Health Behavior Research at Keck Medicine of USC. Cynthia talks about her Hopi Native American culture and research work in reducing colorectal cancer disparities among this historically marginalized population. Cynthia also shares how she celebrates her Native American culture through her traditional silversmithing (Hopi Girl Silver) and the symbolic meaning behind her creations. We discuss the importance of colorectal cancer screening and how catching a diagnosis early can help make it more treatable. At ACS we understand that Native Americans are rooted in the American story and we are committed to honor them not only today through this programming, but year-round by continuing to center their experiences and stories in our commitment to advancing health equity and addressing cancer disparities in marginalized communities.
