The iconic Barker Block Lofts are a community of condominiums in the desirable Arts District area of Downtown Los Angeles. In need of improvements to its public areas, RA provided architectural services to renovate the rooftop pool deck, with its wonderful view of the City's skyline. The Andrei Duman Gallery redefines and explores the typology of the photographic show gallery on various fronts. Commissioned by internationally reputed photographer, Andrei Duman, this gallery continuously pushes the limits of gallery design through the use of differentiated space which, in this particular case, has no clear boundary. Disrupting the common retail shell of the gallery, the structural system of organic branches were used to reorganize the orthogonal spatial volume. The challenge to create the largest units possible and fit the most units possible on the site, while maintaining a desirable community, has resulted in a dynamic and innovative solution. We have created two unit types (the Modern Family and the Sophisticated Dwelling) which have the same volume and footprint. The floor plates of the second and third floor are situated perpendicular to the first floor. The fourth floor occupies half of the floor plate, allowing for privat...e outdoor space on the roof. The key to these unit types lies in their ability to interlock with one another, creating one rectangular module that achieves great efficiencies for construction. These efficiencies include consistent demising walls, consistent areas for shear walls, back-to-back plumbing and minimal exterior corners. Founded in 2013, Studio of Relativity grew from a humble craftsman bungalow on a Hollywood back lot to our current home in the heart of Downtown LA's Arts District. Cienega Gardens Apartments is a 180 unit, low-income, multi-family project in Covina, California. In 2018, the project was eligible for re-syndication and underwent extensive rehabilitation. RA (Relativity Architects) undertook a complete renovation of the energy-consuming utilities into high-efficiency systems. New drought-tolerant landscaping was installed throughout. The community room, children’s playground, and site safety features were all reimagined. The Gables is inspired by the story of the local Santa Monica Beach Club of the same name that was never fully completed in the 1920s. Working with Mystery, an award-winning Branding/Design agency, our aim was to create the feeling of an independent community eatery, that represented its locality in beach-side Santa Monica. We used a range of materials to give the contrast of everyday finishes, such as white-washed wood, glazed tiles, and mid-century air bricks with aspiratio...nal touches of brass, poured concrete for the flooring and Carrera marble for the counter-top. The concrete bricks around the bar and takeout area were inspired by those overlooking Santa Monica beach and the design of the gate was inspired by the gates in Palisades Park. Recently selected to receive ENR 2020 Award. The Alamo Drafthouse Cinema is an iconic movie house born in Texas, Alamo Draft house combines quality cinema, hospitality, and vintage experience into boutique theaters. The first Los Angeles Alamo Draft house Cinemas, designed in conjunction with Weiss Architecture, is an homage to the exploitation films that dominated the 60’s and 70’s. This project installed the unique movie-going experience into a revitalized mall in Downtow...n LA. With a vibrant lobby bar, full restaurant kitchen, and 13 state of the art screening rooms, the split level project was a hit the moment the doors opened. RA worked collaboratively with the Alamo organization, providing our expertise of existing building renovations, film, acoustics, and hospitality to bring the Alamo experience to life.
