We are seeing triple digits! How do you keep yourself and your pets cool during Summer? Did you know dogs do not sweat like humans? Their primary method to get rid of excess heat is by panting. Older, obese or brachycephalic (short face) dogs are less tolerant of the heat. Follow the safety tips below to help reduce the risk of heat stroke. Unfortunately more then fifty percent of dogs that suffer from heat stroke may die.

RHDV--Rabbit Hemorrhagic Disease Virus--is a highly contagious and deadly disease that is putting rabbits at risk. We want our rabbit owners to know that we have been taking steps to procure a vaccine for this virus, and we expect to have it available by early October. It is a vaccine to be given once every year for best protection. We do not know pricing details yet, but we should have more information next month when we get the vaccine in stock. If you have questions about RHDV or the vaccine (or if you would like to schedule your rabbit/s for vaccination) you are welcome to call us at (559)733-2703. There is also a link to rabbit.org with more helpful information about ways to protect your pet rabbits against this merciless virus.

We are seeing an unfortunate increase in parvovirus cases recently. This disease most commonly affects younger dogs and those with compromised immune systems. This is a horrible illness that can cause death, even despite the best treatment available. The best way to ensure this virus doesn't get your dog is to vaccinate them with vaccines given at appropriate intervals by a veterinarian. Not sure if your dog is fully protected? Call us and we can help determine if your pet has had the vaccines they need.

We are the luckiest vet clinic staff, as we have been treated all week by some very kind-hearted clients who made sure our technicians knew the true meaning of Vet Tech Appreciation Week. We are so grateful for the incredible thoughtfulness and generosity. Knowing our work is valued sure gives us a boost. After thoroughly enjoying all the treats, we are now re-energized to continue serving the needs of small animals in the Central Valley. Thanks a bunch! Oh, and did we mention Happy Boss's Day to our unparalleled veterinarians? We would truly be lost without them.

We apologize for the lack of posts. We've been quite busy and trying to find our stride during the era of COVID-19. Our clients have been so patient with us while we adapt to these new circumstances, and for that we thank you. We are still practicing stringent cleaning policies and having owners remain in the car while pets come in for treatment. We greatly appreciate how cooperative everyone is being--it makes our jobs less complicated, and that goes a long way. If our clinic leaders feel the time is right to start relaxing some restrictions, we will eagerly update you. Until then, hang in there, wash your hands, social distance, wear your masks, and stay strong. We wish you all health and happiness.

Everyone is trying to stay strong under these new and uncertain circumstances. We appreciate everyone who is staying at home to flatten the curve and all the patience our clients are displaying while we try to serve urgent pet needs for our community. Just to update our clients, we are discontinuing our Saturday service for the near future. We will be open from 8:00 to 5:30 Monday through Friday. Tulare-Kings Veterinary Emergency Services-- (559)739-7874 --will be open when w...e are closed. We are also notifying those who feed their pets prescription diets that our supply is very limited at the moment. Several of the foods we normally carry are out of stock and some are on back-order. We do not know when we can expect to have our regular supply restored. We apologize for this, but it is one of the things we are unable to control right now. Lastly, we want to thank all of you who have sent us messages of support. It means a lot to us. We are sure thinking of all of you and wishing you health, security, and patience. Keep enduring, snuggle your pets, and wash your hands.

Please take note: typically we would be open on Saturday from 8:00 until noon, however we will be closed for business all day Saturday and Sunday this weekend. We regret any inconvenience this causes to those who were scheduled to bring their pets in tomorrow, as well as any clients who anticipated picking up medications or food on Saturday. Those who were planning to be seen tomorrow are being rescheduled. We sincerely thank all owners for their flexibility and understanding.... To any clients who have requested medication or prescription food orders, you may call us to arrange pick-up either this afternoon or on Monday. As for any future Saturday appointments beyond this weekend, we have yet to determine if they will stand or be rearranged. We value your time and thank you for bearing with us during this period of uncertainty and daily adaptations. Remember, if your pet needs urgent care while we are closed we encourage you to contact one of the following facilities: Visalia: Tulare-Kings Veterinary Emergency Services (559) 739-7054 Fresno: 24/7 PetVets (559) 486-0520 Fresno: Fresno Veterinary Specialty & Emergency Center (559) 451-0800 Fresno: Fresno Pet ER (559) 437-3766

We are doing our best to protect everyone from possible exposure to COVID-19 (the novel coronavirus). For this reason we are implementing some new protocols. These include measures like asking owners to wait in the car and call us when they arrive--do NOT enter the lobby without calling us first. (Our number is 733-2703). A technician will come to your car and escort you and your pet to an exam room. We may also ask owners to stay in the car while their pet's exam is perform...ed if the visit is for routine care. As much as possible we are trying to reduce foot traffic in and out of the clinic as well as ensuring we don't have many people confined closely in our small lobby area. If your pet needs to be seen but you feel any fever or respiratory symptoms yourself, please ask a healthy friend or family member to bring the pet for you (be sure to be available by phone so we may obtain a thorough history of the pet's symptoms). We are also hoping to focus our attentions on critical cases by limiting non-essential services until a clearer picture of how COVID-19 will impact our area develops. We plan to still be open for regular business hours for the time being, but if this changes we will alert you. We wish you all good health for yourselves and your pets.

We want to keep our wonderful clients up to date with all the most current information we have about COVID-19 (the human coronavirus), especially as it pertains to pet care. The big upside is that we have no evidence that this specific strain of virus is a health concern for dogs and cats. However, the American Veterinary Medical Association still recommends good hygiene practices when handling and caring for pets, especially if you have symptoms of illness. If you have questions, review the attached list of FAQs straight from the AVMA, a source we trust to provide factual, scientific information. Want to talk to one of us? Call our clinic at (559)733-2703. https://www.avma.org//2/covid-19-faq-pet-owners_031620.pdf

I don't know if any of you have been struggling with the time change, but my cat has not been a very reliable alarm clock the past few days. If only she would automatically update like my phone! Hope you all have bounced back from the loss of that precious hour of sleep!

While a lot of the information about COVID-19 (the human Coronavirus that is dominating the news) is scary, we want to make sure clients stay informed with factual information. The attached excerpt from the Center for Disease Control's website as COVID-19 pertains to pets is comforting. There are reports that a dog in China has tested positive for COVID-19, but the evidence does not show that COVID-19 is generally contagious to pets, nor that a pet who was contaminated could infect a human. We do not anticipate this becoming a health concern for dogs and cats. That being said, we should all be practicing good hygiene and frequent, thorough hand-washing. Be safe, be informed, be healthy.

Attention: these kittens are here to remind you that tomorrow, Thurs. Feb. 13, we are installing some new devices in our clinic. While this installation is taking place our computers will be turned off. We hope this will take only a few hours, but technology can be unpredictable. We want our clients to be aware that we will still be open for our regular hours of service, though there may be slight delays as we try to survive without the use of computers We know we have the best clients in the whole Valley, so we are sure you'll bear with us as we work through these updates. Many thanks for your understanding!

Redwood Veterinary Hospital 02.07.2020

This is a preliminary post to notify our clients about next Thursday, February 13th, when we will be installing some new devices that will require our computers to be down for several hours. We are planning to still be operational to serve animals' needs during this time, however we may have some delays due to the lack of computer access. These delays may extend to medication refills, so if you are getting low we recommend you call sooner rather than later. We will post another reminder next week as the 13th approaches. As ever, we want to thank our loyal, patient clients as our clinic continues to improve.

Our 2 clinic cats are, regrettably, not the best of friends. This is about as close as they will get without breaking into a fight. We thought we'd document this peaceful moment of tolerance for posterity.
