Last year during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, we had to modify much of our disaster response to help keep everyone safe and healthy. We are preparing to respond to another extremely active wildfire season, by providing people with shelter, food and comfort. Here’s how we’ll approach this year’s response: 1 We’ll work with our partners to open safe evacuation points and group shelters for those evacuating wildfires. Responding to disasters is a team effort, which ...is why we coordinate with state and local officials to update emergency plans. 2 This year, we’ll plan to open group shelters in most cases. However, in some communities, hotel rooms may be provided if the risk of COVID-19 is particularly high. 3 And we will continue to keep in place our 2020 safety precautions such as masks, health screenings, enhanced cleaning procedures and encouraging social distancing. Our shelter staff and shelter residents will wear masks in our shelters regardless of vaccination status to follow CDC guidance and ensure everyone’s safety. 4 To learn more on how we are preparing for the potentially active disaster season, visit: rdcrss.org/3gnp2qd

How will you get there?... If you get separated, do you have a rally point? Who will be your emergency contact? Learn more: rdcrss.org/3ce9OS5

On the last day of our fiscal year, we want to recognize the Red Crossers of Central California who went above and beyond these last 12 months to prevent and alleviate human suffering. Words can't describe how much we appreciate you! Gail McGovern, our National CEO, recently told our team, "Red Crossers can do anything" and we couldn't agree more!

Pets are part of the family too. As you put together or restock your emergency kits, be sure to include supplies for your furry friends too! Check out what else goes into a pet emergency kit at redcross.org/pets

As the first significant storm of the season rolls into Central California this weekend, safety is a top priority. If you're on the road and encounter a flooded roadway, turn around and go another way. Remember: turn around, don’t drown!
