Lake County's cross country teams, including the Middletown Mustangs, are leading the long road back to high school sports action now that they've been cleared to hold a long-delayed 2020 season because of the coronavirus pandemic.
Leading high school sports back from their long COVID-19 pandemic slumber are Lake County's hard-working cross country squads, including the Middletown Mustangs and new head coach Taylor Tiraterra. Middletown held its first official practice of the long-delayed 2020 cross country season on Monday. On Thursday, the Mustangs did a series of sprints on Rabbit Hill, which is located near the school's campus. Actual cross country competition will begin later this month or early ne...xt month. The logistics of holding meets and making sure COVID-19 safety protocols are in place are being worked out now. Other sports such as tennis, golf and track & field will begin in the coming weeks. Baseball and softball workouts will begin soon as well, however, those sports can't hold actual games until Lake County reaches the red tier, one step up from the current purple tier, on the COVID-19 color-coded tier chart established by the state. The last time any Lake County high school sports team was in action (Upper Lake softball) was mid-March of 2020, or nearly a year ago. (Photos by Brian Sumpter) See more
