Happy Pollinator Week! Check out our native bee nesting block, aka the Leaning Tower of Bee-sa! Did you know that the majority of bee species are solitary - they live on their own, not in a hive or other social system? Solitary bees lay their eggs in cavities in the ground or wood, such as the holes in this bee hotel. A ball of pollen and nectar is deposited and an egg is laid on it. This process is repeated until the cavity is filled and then the bee caps it off. The holes in this nesting block are almost all utilized! So excited to be contributing to native bee populations! This beautiful nesting box is from SoloBee, based here in San Diego.

Brush got your goat? SDG&E has a solution - send out a herd to thin the weeds! Targeted grazing like this actually stimulates plant growth and mulches the understory while removing the most flammable fuels. https://bit.ly/2RIBwQZ #goats #targetedgrazing #carbonfarming #wildfireprevention

There is still so much to learn about the monarch! Sadly, the results of this year’s Thanksgiving Western Monarch Count indicate that far fewer monarchs made it to their overwintering sites compared to previous years. You can help the beautiful western monarch by filling data gaps and sharing where you see them all year long. Check out the Western Monarch Milkweed Mapper by the The Xerces Society to join this fun and rewarding effort to conserve the monarch. The mapper lets you share observations of western monarchs, breeding, and locations of milkweed plants to help build a greater understanding of their movements.
