The Covid-19 pandemic has revealed a few important points that are worth mentioning. Within the economic system, at a macro level, it has revealed the crisis within Capitalism in general and within unfettered Capitalism in particular (United States). It has clearly shown that the Capitalist state represents the interests of the ruling elite and that it only sees people (labor) as objects that produce surplus value for owners of capital. Labor has become dehumanized and has b...een reduced to commodities to be bought and sold for profit (psychopathy at the societal level). At a micro level, Covid-19 has revealed the psychopathy among our populace. The lack of empathy, the self-centeredness, greed, cheating, exploitation, etc. The old rules seem to be breaking down, and new normal seems to be a fearful existence and has exaggerated the existing contradictions within the society. It has organized the owners of capital against labor, rich against the poor, young against the old, men against women, whites again people of color, healthy against the sick. Other sentient being and the nature have not been immune from this relentless attack of psychopathic drives either. What is to be done? I don't claim to have the answer but I know that the current system of governance is not sustainable, neither from a humanistic nor from an economic perspective. Is socialism the answer? I believe yes, but are we ready for it? I would like to paraphrase a quote from Wilhelm Reich mentioned by Alexander Lowen - The Alexander Lowen Foundation Alexander Lowen in his book "Fear of Life": 'The society is sick and must change but sick people cannot change a sick society'. And we are also facing an utter sickness within the human society - an emotional plague, to borrow a term from Wilhelm Reich.
