September is National Mushroom Month! . Wahoo!... Mushrooms are one of my favorite vegetables. Sauteed, stuffed, in Marsala, raw in salads, on my burger.. you name it. Mushrooms provide many of the same nutritional benefits as vegetables, as well as attributes commonly found in meat, beans and grains. They are low in calories, fat free, cholesterol free, gluten free and are low in sodium. They are full of B vitamins: Riboflavin, Niacin, Pantothenic acid as well as Selenium, Ergothioneine, Copper, Potassium! They are a powerful superfood and antioxidant. The awesome thing about mushrooms is they are ALWAYS in season and grow year round. Mushrooms have many varieties..What are you favorites? Portabella crimini white button shitake oyster enoki beech maitake Royal trumpet Enjoy your mushroom concoctions! #mushrooms #mushroommonth #mushroomsofinstagram #cookingwithmushrooms #crimini #portabellamushrooms #whitebuttonmushrooms #shitake #maitake #oystermushrooms #royaltrumpetmushrooms #beechmushrooms #eatyourmushrooms

Common Weight Loss Mistakes Mistake #1. Cutting out carbohydrates a. Everyone NEEDS carbs to survive. b. Carbs are your primary energy source and is the largest food group... c. Carbs are converted to glucose, which is taken up by your brain and skeletal muscles. d. The rest is stored in the liver as glycogen, which can be used as immediate energy source or stored for future use. Mistake #2 . Misusing the word CARBS Please don’t say I don’t eat carbs! Everybody eats carbs. Carbohydrates are the biggest good group. It consists of fruits, vegetables, milk, yogurt, all starches and all grains! Like I said... HUGE! Mistake #3. Not eating enough protein a. Protein is not an energy source but can aid in replenishing glycogen repletion b. Protein creates better muscle refueling and rebuilding c. Protein reduces Cortisol, a hormone that breaks down muscle and increases sugar in the bloodstream d. Amino acids from protein, if readily available, enhances muscle repair and reduces muscle soreness e. Protein helps burn fat! Mistake #5. Eating too much protein! Too much protein and low carbs can lead to weight gain as fat is stored. It can lead to constipation d/t decreased amounts of fiber and can cause kidney damage. DO NOT exceed 0.8-1.2 G protein/kg of body weight. It’s NOT 1 g/lb of body weight!!!! Mistake #6. Skipping meals Skipping meals can actually have the reverse effect that you’d expect. When skipping meals, your body goes in to the fed-fast state (starvation mode). Your brain will use all the carbs to function and your body will go into lipolysis in essence turns everything else into Fatty Acids and stores it in your adipose tissue Mistake #7. Listening to your friends advice What works for your friend may not work for you! Everyone’s body chemistry is completely different. Weight loss strategies MUST be individualized to your needs, likes, goals, comorbidities. All of this need to be considered when starting a new program that’s going to produce RESULTS #commonweightlossmistakes #weightlosstips #weightlossmotivation #healthandwellness #lifestyle #randisnutrition #motivation #success #journeytohealth

diet ‘Dahy-it’ The word diet can be a noun, verb or adjective... 1. The kinds of food that a person, animal, or community habitually eats. "a vegetarian diet"health problems related to you diet 2. A special course of food to which one restricts oneself, either to lose weight or for medical reasons. "I'm going on a diet 3. Restrict oneself to small amounts or special kinds of food in order to lose weight. "it's difficult to diet" . crash-diet"she dieted for most of her life" 4. reduced in calories a diet soft drink 5. promoting weight loss (as by depressing appetite) diet pills The word diet has many connotations. Diet, dieter, dieting, crash-diet, elimination-diet, balanced-diet I’m on a diet. Arghhh I hate dieting. This diet sucks.. Can you recommend a good diet. What do you think about the _____ diet? Then there’s the diets themselves: Ketogenic, Paleo, Whole 30, Dukan, South Beach, Zone, Fodmap, Paleo, raw food , celery juice, alkaline, blood type, five-bite, juice cleanses, apple cider vinegar, Ornish, Volumetrics, HCG..... seriously people??? Shall I go on. As a practicing RDN & in my personal life, I do NOT use the word diet, b/c to me, it’s negative I prefer Lifestyle, healthy eating, meal planning, heart healthy... These sound better & don’t have anything negative attached to it Weight loss is a gradual process of lifestyle change & behavior modification. It is not a quick-fix & that’s all that a diet is good for quick results that don’t last & do not teach proper eating, lifestyle choices, new habits or changed behaviors! So if a diet is what you want.I say go for it! Follow the fad that consumes social media & makes society feel that they don’t look the way society thinks they should look, instead of encouraging beauty from within! But you if you want to look & feel your best for the rest of your life then consider a healthy life style that you can pass on to your children & become a positive role model for those who surround your world! Lots to think about next time you see or use the word DIET..right?
