What winter growing vegetable do you love harvesting the most? We love that in the Sacramento region we can grow a wide variety of vegetables throughout the winter months and allow for year-round growing! This customer’s garden is producing delicious foods like Romanesco broccoli, red romaine lettuce, super crisp celery, rainbow Swiss Chard, and both snow and sugar snap peas! Helpful tip for growing Romanesco Broccoli:... This plant can grow 2-3’ in diameter so it needs nutrient rich soil and will grow the largest crown when given a location of full sun (at least 8 hrs/day). Similar to broccoli and cauliflower it doesn’t like the soil to dry out so keep the watering schedule consistent and water close to the soil or use drip to prevent any fungal diseases on the leaves. If timed properly, this edible can be grown twice in a year! Once in spring and again in early fall if transplanted into the garden in early September. #yardtofork #raisingedibleyards #gardeningtips #gardening #broccoli #themoreyouknow #smallbusiness #sacramento #roseville #granitebay #edh #happycustomer

Blood oranges have to be one our most favorite fruits to grow in the home garden! These pictured are Moro blood oranges that are ready to be juiced for a sweet, slightly tart, and flavorful drink! The second batch will most likely be made into a blood orange marmalade! The deep maroon color of the juice develops first on the blossom end and in the vesicles against each of the segment walls. This beautiful change only occurs in the fruit when the night time temps are nearing t...heir lowest through late autumn and into winter. If the fruit after harvest is held in cold storage, this process will be allowed to continue. The pigments that give blood oranges this unique color also give them a higher antioxidant value than other orange types. Another great reason to incorporate blood oranges into your edible garden! Not sure what variety to go with Here are some details for the 3 most popular varieties of blood orange: MORO: Most colorful, with deep red flesh ranging from ruby to nearly black and a red blush on the rind. Sweet with a hint of raspberry. Slightly more bitter than Tarocco or Sanguinelli and has very few seeds. TAROCCO: The sweetest variety with a thin orange skin and slightly blushed with red tones. The flesh has the least red pigmentation, but It has the highest vitamin C content and is seedless. SANGUINELLI: Has a reddish rind, few seeds, sweet orange flesh with red streaks, and is closest to the Moro variety. The fruit matures a bit later into February, but fruit can remain on the tree until April. #yardtofork #raisingedibleyards #bloodoranges #themoreyouknow #homegarden #gardening #gardenbeds #gardeningtips #smallbusiness #sacramento #farmtofork #citrus #roseville #eldorado #granitebay

Nothing better than a bouquet of beets, right? One variety of red beet that we love to grow in the gardens we serve are the cylindra variety. Their cylindrical shape make it very nice for pickling or slicing. Not to mention these deep red roots can grow up to 8 inches long and almost 2 inches wide!! So you’ll get 3 to 4 times more uniform slices than your typically round beets! *Harvest the outermost leaves off each beet plant a little at a time throughout the season for a ...very sweet addition to your salad. The leaves of this variety are a little sweeter than most other beets too! Enjoy!! :) #yardtofork #themoreyouknow #raisingedibleyards #vegetabletips #localfarming #farmtofork #beets #cylindrabeets #gardeningtips #sacramento #smallbusiness #shopsmall #roseville #granitebay #eldorado

Wish your garden was growing garlic like this?? Well now’s the time to start planning and planting for a harvest that will keep your pantry stocked with this delicious allium all year long! Garlic is best planted in the Sacramento area in the mid-fall to early winter and takes roughly 9-10 months to reach full maturity, but your patience will be well rewarded year after year if harvested/replanted correctly since this little root veggie is a perennial! #YardtoFork #Garlic #Allium #RaisingEdibleYards #Sacramento #themoreyouknow #perennials #gardening #gardeningtips #roseville #granitebay #eldorado

As part of the legume family, planting snow peas in your garden this fall can help improve your overall soil health by adding nitrogen and enhancing soil structure. Legumes have a fascinating symbiotic relationship with a bacterium called Rhizobium. These live in nodules on the plant’s roots and are able to convert nitrogen in the air into ammonia, which the plant is able to absorb and use to grow. As for soil structure, a protein called glomalin that is exuded by the roots o...f the plant acts as a sort of glue that increases air space and reduces erosion in the soil. But most importantly, snow peas are also a delicious snack!! Let the team at Yard to Fork get you started improving your health and your garden’s by planting snow peas (and much more) in your raised bed today! #YardtoFork #EatLocal #RaisedBeds #Sacramento #themoreyouknow #raisingedibleyards #gardeningtips #gardentips #gardening #roseville #granitebay #eldorado

Noticing labyrinthine lines on the leaves of some of your plants this season? Leaf miners could be the culprit! Not limited to a single organism, leaf miners are defined as flies, moths, or beetles whose larvae burrow between the two surfaces of a leaf, leaving distinct tracks as they mine the nutritious leaf tissue. Leaf miners rarely completely kill a plant, but can pose a significant risk for infection and other issues down the road. Though there are a few ways to deal ...with these little pests once they arrive, we believe prevention is the best medicine. Making sure to cultivate healthy soil has the potential to stop leaf miner larvae before they can even infest your plants. The better the soil, the stronger your plants will be when it comes to fending off any threats that do get to them! #YardtoFork #EatLocal #RaisedBeds #Sacramento #themoreyouknow #raisingedibleyards #gardening #gardentips #gardeningtips #roseville #granitebay #eldorado
