Mass deforestation = exposed land and loss of root systems = #desertification. In desertified areas the soil becomes infertile, #biodiversity is lost, and #drought conditions can occur in areas far beyond the site of forest clearing. Combating desertification and drought represents a fight not only for conservation, but for food and water security and disaster risk reduction. In addition to seeking to halt illegal deforestation, Rainforest Connection is creating a worldwide p...latform for the sharing of biodiversity data so that policymakers, scientists, and people everywhere will have the knowledge to promote and adopt better land management practices and policies. For #DesertificationandDroughtDay2021, join the UN Convention to Combat Desertification and Drought for a day of live streaming events focusing on transforming degraded land. #RestorationLandRecovery #EndLandLoss

Today is #WorldOceanDay! Did you know that sound pollution causes as much damage to marine life as overfishing, pollution and climate change? ... Rainforest Connection has gone below the surface, partnering with ORCA Ireland to launch a first-of-its-kind monitoring program to better understand the impact of watercraft on whales and dolphins, who rely on sound for navigation, communication and reproduction. . The Smart Whale Sounds project involves a data gathering buoy deploy...ed off Ireland's southern coast. The real-time sound data collected by the buoy is then used to create machine learning models for marine wildlife detection and classification. . The information gathered through this project will provide a greater understanding of how cetaceans respond to noise pollution and ship activity, in addition to guiding the creation and management of potential protected areas. . Follow ORCA Ireland and Smart Whale Sounds to stay up-to-date on this fascinating project and learn more about what you can do to help #protectmarinelife. #tech4all #rfcx #savethewhales #savetheoceans https://youtu.be/FDYuKEcAoGM

Happy #WorldEnvironmentDay from Rainforest Connection! As part of our our extensive #PuertoRico biodiversity monitoring project, our field teams recently traveled to remote Isla de MonaPuerto Rico's third largest islandto place acoustic monitoring devices at over 50 sites across the island. Our team has captured stunning imagery of Puerto Rico’s features and fauna, including endemic species such as the the critically endangered Mona iguana and the endangered yellow-shoul...dered blackbird. The data obtained from this project will result in a more comprehensive understanding of Puerto Rican biodiversity, making it possible to better support positive conservation management practices.
