With Valentine's Days right around the corner, dating and relationships can be tough on teens and tweens-and their parents. "As adults, we tend to view a lot of adolescent relationships as 'puppy love,' and it diminishes how intense those emotions can be," says Dr. Willough Jenkins, inpatient medical director of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Services at Rady Children's. "As a parent, recognize how important and impactful those relationships really are." "This is definitely the highest, pure volume of patients we ever have seen with COVID positivity," said Dr. Laurie Bernard Stover, director of inpatient services at Rady Children's. "Although many patients are COVID positive so they're placed in the unit under precautions they're here for a different reason, COVID isn't the primary reason for admission; it's more of an incidental finding." Learn more in this article from Los Angeles Times' Brittny Mejia.

Cases of multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children are increasing, says Rady Children's physician Dr. Jane Burns, a leading researcher of the illness. MIS-C occurs after a child is exposed to COVID-19, and causes inflammation to organs and symptoms such as gastrointestinal issues, fever, difficulty breathing and rash. Hear more from Dr. Burns and a local family whose child faced MIS-C in a segment with CBS 8 - San Diego News' Kelly Hessedal.
Here's to a wonderful year ahead.
This holiday season, our community has found all sorts of ways to share their care for the kids at Rady Children's. We are endlessly grateful for the commitment of our friends throughout San Diego and beyond. Starting with an outpouring of support on #GivingTuesday, continuing on through our most successful Giveathon to date (more than $488,000 raised!) and ending with a show-stopping Light the Way virtual celebration and parade of lights -- when it comes to our awesome community, we have much to be thankful for this holiday season. From all of us at Rady Children's, happy holidays to you and yours!
Our Light the Way virtual celebration last night ended with a big, bright and very moving show of support from San Diego Fire-Rescue Department and San Diego Police Department. In a year when we couldn't gather in-person, it meant so much to have our Hospital surrounded with light.
Even if our lives are largely fulfilling, it’s not unusual to have moments where it’s tough to feel that way and the same goes for kids, too. However, studies show that expressing gratitude can have mental and physical health benefits, which contribute to happier, healthier children. Gratitude is a big concept, but teaching it to children needn’t be complicated, explains Nora Camacho, a behavior specialist at Alexa’s PLAYC. Tank the Hospital therapy dog, his friends at the San Diego Gulls and other special guests have been hard at work to Light the Way for our patients. See you tonight!
As nurses, we often put our self-care needs down at the bottom of our priority list. CPR for the Soul provides a space to share the difficult work, debrief from the challenges of the day, and talk about our own struggles. We need to take care of each other to be there to take care of the kids. Joanne Auger, a supportive care registered nurse coordinator for Rady Children's Peckham Center for Cancer & Blood Disorders, created the Hospital's CPR for the Soul program in partnership with colleagues Tamara Nunez, a nurse educator, and Lisa Thompson, a clinical nurse in the Peckham Center. Learn more about their heartfelt mission and the program in a new San Diego Magazine feature.
Cheers for Peers honoree Dr. Scott Herskovitz, a pediatric emergency medicine physician, works in the main emergency department at Rady Children's and also in the ED at Rancho Springs Medical Center in Murrieta. Having a PICU nurse as a mother influenced him to become a doctor, and he enjoys the fast-past setting of emergency care. Learn more about Dr. Herskovitz in his video story.
Five years ago, Victoria was rushed to Rady Children’s with a ruptured appendix. During recovery she spent as much time as she could in the Hospital’s playroom creating Halloween themed arts and crafts. It felt like vacation, not a Hospital, Victoria says. Every Halloween since her hospitalization, Victoria has collected craft supplies or raised money for the craft program to help ensure kids like her enjoy a not so scary Hospital experience. Thanks for your generous support, Victoria. Happy Halloween!
Window washers dressed as superheroes visited the Hospital today to spread Halloween spirit! This was the sixth year that employees from A-Plus Window Cleaning have visited wearing capes, tights, and masks, with the goal of bringing smiles to the real superheroes receiving treatment inside the hospital.
We are deeply thankful to Adam Lambert who is using his voice to support Rady Children’s Center for Gender-Affirming Care. Watch the video below and follow Adam’s Feel Something Foundation to learn more about his advocacy for LGBTQ youth.
When you give the gift of Yes, No, you are too sick," becomes "Yes, you still deserve to just be a kid." "No, there is a pandemic," becomes "Yes, there are still ways to celebrate." "No, this is too difficult," becomes "Yes, there is still hope."... #TellThemYes today at radyfoundation.org/yes.
Happy National Respiratory Care Week to the Rady Children's team of respiratory therapists (picture taken before COVID-19)! SIDS Awareness Tip of the Week: If you breastfeed your baby, put them back in their separate safe sleep area after feeding if you’ve brought them into your bed. Feeling tired before or during feeding? Set a time for every few minutes so you can stay awake until you can return your baby to their sleep area, or ask someone to check in and help. #SafeToSleep #SafeSleepSnap (Photo via NICHD)
During October, we celebrate Physical Therapy Month and recognize the amazing work Rady Children's team of therapists does every day.
